All hail Cthulhu

Chaosium publisher has gone insane. First the middle ages, now the roman era. A pleasant book with lots of ideas and scenarios, new mythos creatures, tomes and rules. And rules for ancient combat (you can stab a Gug with a Scorpion!). The only flaw I saw was the way they describe the Olympian Gods; not a good idea.
If you like fantasy or historical games with notes of terror, you will like this book. If you play CoC and want new scenarios you will like it too.

Cthulhu....All through the years

I am almost finished reading this book as of this review. The maps are great and the information is very well put together and detailed. The amount of raw setting gives one the ability to run whatever and wherever one wishes, but not at the expense of it being too boxed-in! Great Product!

Terror in the Ancient World.

This book is well researched and provides an evocative view of the mythos in ancient Rome. I picked it up purely for reading pleasure and I am finding that to fulfills that nicely. It is only a basic primer though, their is still much research to do flesh out some of the surrounding territories in the ancient world. It has a nice section on different cults of this age.

STUNNING BEAUTY

FABULOUS . . . the jewelry is amazing. Personal comments from Elizabeth like having her speak to you directly of her love for these treasures and those associated with them. Many photos of her a bonus. Have wanted this book since it was published and thrilled to finally own it. You will laugh and cry while reading about how many of the pieces came to her. Some unbelievably expensive, others valued beyond price. I seem to remember when the book came out about her saying this was the closest she would come to talking about her love affairs. A lasting tribute of a great lady with a most generous and loving heart. I wonder where many of these jewels now reside . . .

Grandma loved it

I didn't read this book. I bought it as a gift for my 87 year old grandmother. Someone had mentioned this book on another website and I came here to look it over.
I was impressed. The photographs I saw and the reviews were impressive. I knew she would love it. I bought it for her for Mother's Day.
She phoned me to tell me how much she LOVED it! I've never seen her go on and on about a book. I know if she didn't love the book she would have just said "Thank you sweetheart." But this was a different reaction. Her friends have seen the book on the table in the living room and tell her how much they love it. And how the photographs are superb.
I'm sure when I visit her I will spend hours looking at this book at her house. She told me that she spent hours and hours just sitting in the chair looking at all the great photos.

This book rambles on and on again. The first few chapters are the worst as you go into the other chapters in the book it does get a little better. This book is a prime example, of "people will publish anything for money". Our Professor has requested a new book hopefully a new book author is approved. We had to use this book and it sucked, so I hope the next students won't have too.

Book teaches math skills we all can use

As promised, this book makes math fun. I've been out of college for over 40 years, and I am having a ball with this book. I always liked math, it just did not like me. Learning the math of the Universal Product Code (UPC) and Bank Account Routing numbers was worth the price of the book.

I really liked this book, even as a mathematics major. It was a great introduction to areas of math I thought I had no interest in as well as a good overview of effective mathematical thinking. After reading this book and taking a course that went along with it I developed a new-found interest in graph theory, which was an area I thought I hated.

If you think you hate mathematics, this is a good book for you. The explanations of seemingly-intimidating concepts are clear and there are lots of explanations of how you see these phenomena in the "real world."

Overall, I highly recommend this.

AACEI does not use this as a reference for the test anymore since it is out of print. I got it cheap, and it is much harder to digest than the AACEI reference books we need for the test. I will still keep it as a reference just in case it shows up as a reference in a technical paper from a few years ago.

This is a great book to have especially if you are a Charles Leland fan. The first part of the book contains copies of the story in his own handwriting and the second part is from the author. It is not a book that you sit down and read all at once. I am still working on it but it is truly worthwhile.

A marvelous and fun piece of work!

The original manuscript, which was done by Charles Leland himself under an assumed identity as Dame Darrel, is fascinating. I feel like I learn more about Mr. Leland every time I open this book- his way of looking at the world, his love for crafting books of magic, and his fascination with folklore and the occult all seem to really pop out. Plus, the magical lore in the book is quite entertaining, and often enlightening, as to the way folks of his era look at the world and various practices which are available to a savvy witch.

All in all? EXCELLENT purchase!

Not what I hoped for

I knew going in that this was an "imaginative recreation" based on Leland's research of folklore, and I was not expecting something like his "Aradia." Yet even so I was disappointed to find that the content is basically a roll-call of brief descriptions of several kinds of fairies, mythical creatures, and spirits, with a few (presumably made-up) folk magic charms and divinatory spells sprinkled in here and there. Perhaps knowing anything of the kind would have gotten one tried for a witch at the time the book fictionally presents itself as having been written, but I find it difficult to call the result a "book of witchcraft," certainly not "perhaps the first modern Book of Shadows" as the jacket has it (presumably related to speculation in the prefatory essay about whether there might be a very tenuous connection between the present text and later writings of Gerald Gardner). The editor's foreword essay about the book is interesting enough, and I suppose the facsimile of the manuscript presented is nice to look at if you like that sort of thing (including Leland's often hard-to-read calligraphy!), but I think overall it might have had more value to me if I were more interested in Leland's personal history and that of his writings (independent of their content). I had been hoping to get a kind of "grimoire" that presented more method (fictionalized though it be) on magic, ritual, spirits, etc. This isn't really that book.

About the Author
Stuart Sweetow is a videographer specializing in corporate video production and informational videos. His career started in 1970 when he won First Place in the Southern Illinois University Film Festival. He worked as a staff videographer for corporations for several years until he founded Audio Visual Consultants, a video production company specializing in producing training and marketing videos for corporations and non-profit organizations. Sweetow taught video production for seven years at the University of California Berkeley Extension, and has written over 100 articles on video for various magazines. His father was a television producer when the medium was just getting started in the 1950s. Sweetow remembers playing with film editing equipment on the family dining room table. In 1983 after getting laid off from his corporate video job, he started Audio Visual Consultants, a video production and consulting company. His first client was his former employer. Sweetow built the company slowly over the years, specializing in producing informational videos.

Excellent text offering an encyclopedic coverage of corporate video production!

Stuart Sweetow could have titled his text, "Corporate Video Production: An Encyclopedia," it's that thorough and comprehensive. Anyone with an interest in video production will find this to be an easily-used, informative and very helpful text. Sweetow, who owns his own video production/consulting company in Oakland, California area draws upon a long career of "been there, done that" experience, and a gift for writing that makes this a must-have book for those in the field.

I especially enjoyed how he comfortably describes the ups-and-downs of his own career to help frame the theoretical and practical content he conveys. Throughout the text he discusses his own experiences with working with CEOs, directors, producers, scriptwriters and others one typically encounters in the field. Opening with case studies from Google, McDonalds, and Booz Allen Hamilton, he uses these to introduce the step-by-step process to find talent, make new employee videos, new product videos, how to market yourself as a producer, ways to network and get new business, how to develop your proposals, formulate a budget, direct the videos, coordinate production, write the script, work with talent, and many more helpful and practical ways to find success in this niche.

This is a gem of a book -- it's like getting an outstanding $500 per hour consultant who is also a gifted writer, putting everything he knows on paper and handing it to you.

Best In Class - Highly Recommended

"Corporate Video Production" is the best video production book I currently have in my library. We professionally produce instructional and promotional videos in my wife's business (well over 24 now, including one for a Fortune 500 company), so have a very good idea of what we are doing.

This is "soup to nuts" complete, containing advice that would have been very helpful when we were first starting out and even a few tips that we haven't come up with by ourselves after six years of video production. The writing style is easy to follow and contains a lot of the author's personal experiences, which is helpful since I like learning from other people's mistakes so we don't have make our own. The book is laid-out logically and, while I recommend even experienced video makers read it all the way through, it is easy to find specific subjects of interest.

This is an excellent reference for any video maker!

Extremely Thorough

It's hard to think of any question you could have about corporate video production that isn't touched on in this book. Do you want to shoot videos for the government? You'll find details about that. Did you know that makeup for corporate videos should be applied with disposable tools? You'll learn why. Have you ever wondered how many Twitter accounts Walmart has? Neither have I, but this book will tell you.

With so much ground to cover, this book often ends up sounding like a collection of tips. For example, the chapter on social media and marketing has dozens of examples of ways major companies use YouTube and lists several useful websites, but never explains how to create a video suited to social media sites, how to upload a video to YouTube, how to track views, or how to brand a channel. It might be said that video production doesn't include these things -- but then why have a chapter on it?

Think of this book as an opportunity to hang out with a successful video producer as he tells you what he's doing and shares lots and lots of stuff he has learned on the job. You may not end up with all the skills you need for video production, but you'll certainly learn plenty.

The most useful sections of the book may be the ones most suited to the tip approach: how to prepare the CEO of a company for his or her big close up, how to present yourself as a video producer, what to bring on location. The book does, however, have chapters on everything from creating a proposal for a video project to directing and coordinating the project to scriptwriting (after directing it, for some reason) to legal considerations, shooting and editing, and special situations such as filming a conference or creating videos for a nonprofit. There is an appendix with sample budgets, a glossary, and a collection of photos showing shoots in progress.
