Common and Inaccurate

Haynes it touted to be the best manual. Overall I found it useful (execpt for the sort of out-of-this-world rebuild your engine section. They try to cover too much. Case in point, I bought this to help service a 2003 Sonoma in need of wheel bearings. The manual did not have accurate torque figures for that year. Had I relied 100% on this manual I'd have ruined 300.00 worth of parts. Spend the extra and get a good shop manual.

Haynes Repair Manual Skimms over certain details with regard to ABS brake issues

This Haynes Repair Manual shows certain pictures of easy to do tasks, but only skims over topics like, location of ABS sensors. This books is almost useless because all of the difficult tasks that I need more illustration (pictures), and details do not exist. I would have gotten the chiltons, but they were out.

Tries to cover too many models and years under one book.

I have had plenty of Haynes manuals in the past and have never had a problem. This one seems to try to cover too big of a range of years and models. I was replacing a wheel hub for a 2002 Chevy Blazer 2wd, and this book only had the instructions for a 4wd, and then the ref to the 2wd didn't even make sense for the components that I had. Also, I couldn't even properly identify the torque settings for the slider pins on the front caliper based off the language of the book. Too confusing. Wouldn't recommend this book if you have a 2002 Blazer 2wd.

A good glimpse of the late 80s' guys (some of whom are still around)

Whenever I read and find worth in an investment book (or any other non-fiction work, for that matter), I like to see what other books the author recommends. I had just finished Pat Dorsey's "The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing" where he recommends this book's predecessor, viz. "The Money Masters" by John Train. Well, I couldn't get my grubby mitts on that, so I got its "sequel" instead. Note that about 3/7ths of the book consists of appendices (or appendixes, if you prefer).

The book contains an interesting hodgepodge of chapters. Frankly, I'd only heard of George Soros and Peter Lynch before reading this, but now I know about Jim "Up with commodities and China . . . and by the way, I don't like people" Rogers (lose the bowtie, man) and John Neff (who I just saw in a Jan. 2009 issue of "Fortune" magazine). Not only do you get brief biographies of each man, but you get insight into their investment philosophies and techniques.

By far the least comprehensible "guru" is George Soros. He's a genius, crazy, lucky or some combination of all three. Frankly, I had no idea what he was talking about most of the time and--if reviews of his "The Alchemy of Finance" are accurate--few others do, either.

At least when you read the Peter Lynch section, he doesn't constantly say "four-bagger," "ten-bagger" and "twenty-bagger" like he so often does in "One Up on Wall Street." As in that book, he talks about Dunkin' Donuts and companies that make caskets or breed rats for experimentation as good investments.

There are two interesting sections that don't discuss investment gurus per se. These are "Old Money" and "Managing Harvard's Money." The first talks about firms that manage rich people's money and how, over time, the investments tend to become safer over time (preserving existing capital rather than risking it) and how the freeloading, spoiled children of the rich are always pawing over Mom and Dad's loot. The other section is self-explanatory.

The conclusions of the book are seeping with sagacity, my fellow investing friends. Train considers the widely varying philosophies of the men he has interviewed, generates some observations and makes a few recommendations.

Have a dictionary handy.

Dr. Spellman is not afraid to put his education and his vocabulary on display in this fascinating "tour" of the history of funerary rites, and religious views. This is not an "easy" read but is a deeply satisfying one. If you like superb writing and a look from the other side of the mirror on the subject of death you came to the right book.

For a short book (a mere 211 pages) I got an excellent "education" from one who is likely, a great teacher.

Some things to consider:
1-There are other books with the same title so be careful that you buy the right one;
2- While not overtly anti-religious his clear implications are that to believe in life after death is to live in a child's dream;
3- If you are sensitive about attacks on your chosen religion, approach this book with care. Just discussing the facts is enough to make priests, rabbi's, iman's and other clergy look like fools or charlatans, or both.
4-Don't buy this book if you don't like erudite writing and skillful phrasing. He characterizes Alzheimer's effects with a pithy phrase that really sums up its effects on humans.In his words it results in "cognitive plunder".

In sum: I recommend this book.

Great book

It's a tough book to read glad I'm taking a reading course which requires we right vocab words because there are an infinite amount of words I really don't know. But it's a great book once you understand the words Spellman really gets in touch with every cultural thought of death.

MORE than 5 stars!

This book is among my favorites in my Pagan library. I have had it since it was published and have over the years bought several copies. It's either been referred to so much it's fallen apart or has been borrowed and never returned. The brilliance of Scott's teachings are that he teaches only what's worked for him but he gives permission to you as Practitioner to evolve into your own Witch - you can tweak the spells so that they work for you and he applauds that and suggests that you do just exactly that. I have always had nothing but respect for the man and his writing - and am sad that he's no longer in this world to write more and share more of his wisdom.

This is a great book to give to a new witch, one who is just starting out on their path and also for those who're perhaps more jaded and have been on their path for decades and maybe needing a reminder as to why they stepped onto this way in the first place - there's inspiration in these pages.

Also, the illustrations by Robin Wood make me want a coloring book of those pictures as well!! Stunning work all around!

Cunningham is great at writing helpful guides for beginners on the path of the Goddess. This book is no exception. The spells are simple and the ingrediants are easily found. No climbing to the top of a maple tree to get the highest leaf to throw in a stream running east. =P Don't you hate that?! ;) This book is a continuation of Earth Power, but you don't have to read that one first. This book has instructions for doing spells using each of the elements. There are also spells that use snow and stars which is rather unique. Also, there is a chapter at the end on how to write and perform your own spells! This is refreshing because it truly does help when your own energy goes into your rituals. I would also recommend Wicca: The Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Cunningham. It is still my favorite of all time for beginners. Best of luck on your journey, and Blessed Be!

Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is a follow-up to the book Earth Power. Both are comprehensive guides to simple folk magick, which doesn't require elaborate ritual but for those who crave ritual can be easily incorporated. But the two books are not clones, nor is Earth, Air, Fire, and Water simply a padded re-release or sequel to Earth Power. They use a similar setup, and cover the same topic, folk magick, but Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is almost wholly new. It covers some of the topics discussed in Earth Power, but encompasses a range of new or related topics. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is indespensible among Cunningham's volume of works. If you want a comprehensive guide to folk magick, and have read Earth Power (you should start with Earth Power), then Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is definitely for you. If you haven't read Earth Power, then do, and then come back for this one, you will learn, be entertained, and probably recommend this and other Scott Cunningham books to friends before too long.
