A connoisseur's tour through the great American art form

A Love Supreme. Miles Ahead. Brubeck Time. Yardbird Suite. The Sidewinder. For newcomers just beginning their library of recordings, and for longtime fans looking to deepen their understanding, New York Times jazz critic Ben Ratliff offers an assertive, deeply knowledgeable collector's guide, full of opinions and insights on the one hundred greatest recorded works of jazz.

From the rare early recordings of Louis Armstrong, through Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman's seminal Carnegie Hall concert, and the lions of the bebop era, to the transformative Miles Davis and several less-canonized artists, such as Chano Pozo, Jimmy Giuffre, and Greg Osby, who have made equally significant contributions, Ratliff places each recording in the greater context and explains its importance in the development of the form. Taken together, these original essays add up to a brief history of jazz, highlighting milestone events, legendary players, critical trends, and artistic breakthroughs.

From Library Journal
Ratliff, a music critic for the New York Times, presents essays on what he considers the 100 most important jazz recordings. In each, he discusses a recording's merits and shortcomings and includes a list of its performers. He seems to address the younger or potential jazz fan; otherwise, how could one explain his comparisons of mid-20th century jazz performances to those of Nirvana and Sonic Youth? Straight and to the point, Ratliff acts as an advocate for what he sees as a popular art form in need of an infusion of interest. This informative book is heavy on obvious albums by Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, and Charlie Parker, but the inclusion of Jeanne Lee, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, "Baby Face" Willette, and present-day phenomenon Jason Moran illustrates Ratliff's catholic view of the jazz genre. Also included is a list (title, main performer, date, and record label information only) of a second 100 recordings. This might not be a book that jazz fans will buy for their personal libraries-they have probably already formed their own tastes and list of favorites-but as a guide for the uninitiated it is essential for academic music libraries and public libraries large and small. It would also be most useful for collection development librarians building a well-rounded jazz CD collection.

From Booklist
Ratliff's essential jazz-records book separates itself from the herd at once by starting its chronological listing with The Creators of Jazz by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, the white outfit that ever since it recorded jazz first has been tarred for crudely ripping off black music. Ratliff defends the ODJB's music making as well as its historic importance while granting that its leader may have been the worst racist in jazz history. Later, he includes, with warm appreciation, Latin jazz players Chano Pozo, Machito, Eddie Palmieri, and Moacir Santos, who aren't even listed in some huge jazz record guides. He has smart and persuasive essays on why underrated popular jazzmen John Kirby, Ahmad Jamal, and "Baby Face" Willette deserve places in the pantheon. He even gives the nod to difficult, dissonant experimenters Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Roscoe Mitchell, and Evan Parker, whom many jazz historians barely tolerate. All that, and Armstrong, Ellington, Holiday, Basie, Tatum, "Bird," Monk, Mingus, Miles, and the others everybody expects to be in on this jam, too. Damn good book. Ray Olson

Decent introduction to jazz
By Joseph Scott
The recommendations in this book are all solid and classic. The brief essays about the recordings are fairly erudite, but I find the tone slightly pretentious at times. I agree with another reviewer in that he tends to write about himself instead of striving for a more objective description of the recordings.

Obviously, a list of 100 recordings cannot begin to justice to the enormous quantity of jazz available. Ratliff's list concentrates more on established "classics" than on modern players -- you will not find Brad Mehldau, Kenny Garrett, Kurt Rosenwinkel, or Nick Payton. Nor will you find more "approachable" but great contemporary musicians such as Kurt Elling and Luciana Souza. Because of this, I do not recommend the guide to someone who wants to get an idea of where jazz is right now. It is more of a historical introduction than a guide for modern listeners. This is not meant as criticism; that is probably what Ratliff intended.

Overall, this book would be a decent place to start for the jazz newbie (or even for the seasoned listener, who may have neglected some or many of these recordings).

Unfair
By Poncho
The reviews here have been too harsh to this book. This book is not meant by any strech to be a replacement for the Penguin Jazz on CD Guide, but as a list and analysis of 100 very good jazz CDs it isn't bad at all. The reviews are generally insightful and informative, and the book contains a fine balance of big band, be-bop, and post-bop, with all the colours in between. (His defense of Cecil Taylor is particularly refreshing.) I might quibble with the title, but no list of 100 CDs will satisfy every reader as including all the "essentials." The main list, combined with the additional 100 CDs listed in the appendix, would provide enough listening enjoyment for a lifetime.

A Clear, Helpful Introduction to Buying Jazz Today
By T. Browning
Ratliff's style is accessible, direct, and relevant to younger folks hoping to discover jazz recordings of merit. One of his themes is that jazz can both be good art and entertain at the same time, which is fantastic in my view because too many folks are intimidated by "America's classical music." Buy this book and you'll reference it a hundred times when hoping to expand your knowledge of the music, I guarantee.

Planetary Powers: The Morin Method, by Patti Tobin Brittain

Planetary Powers is a comprehensive book on the Morin Method of Horoscope Interpretation. It begins with examples of the fundamental principles and steadily advances to the full techniques. Each principle and technique is illustrated with examples. Each of the book's sections focuses on a specific factor of horoscope interpretation. The Morin Method is a practical and useful set of rules that results in accurate chart interpretation. Familiarity with the Astrologia Gallica, the works of John-Baptiste Morin, although desirable, is unnecessary in order to use the Morin Method of Horoscope Interpretation. Section I covers planetary powers, including theory of determinations, houses, signs, planets, essential dignities and debilities, natural and acquired analogy, and analogy of the planets with the houses. Section II explains the cosmic state of the planets in relationship with the houses. Topics covered are benefic and malefic planets, dispositors, peregrine planets, determination through house position and rulership, cause and effect, conjunctions, and determining combination by analogy. Section III discusses the Morin Method regarding determination by actual location, empty house judgment, affairs signified by the houses, determination and evaluation of the effect of a planet in a house, the houses of life and death, and the power of aspects. The book concludes with numerous charts for study. To my knowledge this book is the best available instruction manual for the Morin Method. A pithy outline of Morin's theory of determination
By Anthony Louis
This book is a reissue of the author's 1980 text on Morin's method. It appears to consist of her notes from a class she took on Morin, which was taught by the late Gerhard Houwing who had devoted himself to a study of Morin's Astrologia Gallica. The chapters are mainly lists of Morin's rules with nicely done graphics to illustrate planetary placements. The text is extremely pithy, and everything is packed into 110 pages - the entire length of the book. Overall, this is a useful volume for students of Morin, with some caveats.

What is lacking are the classroom discussions and explanations by the teacher. A newcomer to Morin may find this book hard to follow, since it consists of reading many terse rules and seeing very sketchy examples of how they are applied. There is no discussion of Morin's overall philosophy of astrology, that is, his ideas about why the planets and signs seem to have influence on earth.

In addition, some of the examples are confusing. For example, on page 50, example 10, there is a chart with Saturn ruling the 6th and 7th houses but posited in the 9th. The interpretation is "travel caused an illness" but the rule being illustrated is that the house a planet rules represents the cause and the house the planet occupies represents the effect. By this rule, Saturn ruling the 6th but lying in the 9th should be interpreted as "an illness causes travel."

On page 71 there is an example of one of the author's clients who allegedly has Jupiter in Aquarius, Saturn in Libra, Mercury in Taurus, and Venus in Gemini. This distribution looked odd to me so I looked in the ephemeris to see what else was going on in the chart. It turns out that this combination of planets never occurred in the 20th century, and so the sample chart must contain a typo, but which of the four planets is the typo? The chart does not match the client being described, and it is hard to know what conclusions to draw from an inaccurate chart about Morin's method.

The final section of the book offers the student 18 charts of notable persons for study. Only the charts are presented with no discussion of how Morin's methods apply. It would have been very useful had the author discussed those charts to illustrate the points she was trying to make.

Another important point is that unlike Morin, the author uses the modern planets and the Placidus system of house division. Morin had carefully studied house systems and concluded that the Regiomontanus system was the most reliable in his method. My own experience has been that changing from Regiomontanus to Placidus frequently changes intermediate house cusps and thus the determinations of the planets, which are key to Morin's method. I would advise students first learning Morin's method to stick to Regiomontanus houses and initially to use the traditional rulers rather than the modern planets till they get their feet wet in the waters of Morinus.

With the above caveats in mind, this is a good book to have on hand and will prove useful to those who wish to study Morin.

Excellent summary of some of Morin's methods
By xul
The few inaccurate details mentioned in the prior review are correct. How many books are perfect? Critical expertise means noticing such occasional slips. Of course if would have been quite useful to have a set of complete delineations of some nativities. But in order to master the methods we must do some work ourselves. The prior reviewer is quite correct in pointing out that Morin had studied various house systems and preferred the Regiomontanus system. Morin developed his own late in his career.

Nevertheless, the book would basically deserve 5+ stars. It reflects very well one of the salient qualities of Morin: to strive for coherence, clarity and cohesion. Morin was the last author to write a complete series of books explaining astrology from an Aristotelian paradigm. When he departs from this paradigm, not often and to keep within the framework of the official doctrines of the Christian Roman Catholic Church, Morin explicitly says so.

The format, printing, etc. of the book are excellent, beginning with a nice large typeface easy on the eyes. The sequence of the matters handled is logical and clear.

The erudite Dr. Jean-Baptiste Morin de Villefranche was and is one of the beacon-lights of astrology. This book explains how temporal mundane factors in a native's life flow from the birth map, often indicating which phase of life is concerned. The often encountered 20th century self-restriction of astrology to psychology had, fortunately, not yet occurred.

This book is definitely worth studying and perhaps will whet the appetite for more of Morin.

When stingy self-made millionaire and widower Leon Farrell dies, he leaves behind a legacy of family dysfunction - and a missing will. It's soon clear that his three grown children, Edgar, Gunther, and Shirley, don't handle loss well - the possible loss of a fortune, that is. And when Edgar hires a private investigator to track down the will, it's just the beginning of a search that will lead the siblings to re-visit their childhoods, uncover buried secrets, and ultimately learn for themselves what it means to be a family. For as tensions escalate between the brothers - with their peace-keeping sister caught in the middle - an unexpected conflict of interest is brewing that will shock them all - and either bring them closer together or tear them apart for good.

Family
By Sharel Love
Dysfunction can be part of a family even when one looks from the outside in and all appears to be well. In Gwynne Forster's When the Sun Goes Down, we find this to be so with the three Farrell siblings after the death of their father, Leon.

Leon Farrell was an odd character, who seemed to lose touch with real life and the children that most fathers would hold dear to his heart, especially after the loss of his beloved wife. However, he retreated within himself and played a cruel joke on his family, that could have them at odds with one another and ruin their relationships for good.

The eldest sibling, Edgar, was determined to get what was coming to him as a means to an end and continue to be the rebel that he is and live life on his terms. In the meantime, his brother, Gunther, and his sister, Shirley, tried to live their lives in spite of Edgar and the way they were treated by their father when he was alive. No doubt, their upbringing had a lot to do with who they grew to be, albeit, all three different in their own way.

When it was all said and done, secrets were revealed and hidden things brought to the light as this family strived to keep their families together and receive the things that they believed they were entitled to outside of their father and his eccentric ways. At the end of the day, it is about family and the things that we do to remain one.

What I loved about When the Sun Goes Down is how author Forster took her time to tell the story; there was no need to rush the storyline. I recommend this book to everyone who loves stories about family love and romance.

It was just okay
By Ezinwanyi
This book was a decent read, but it was not very good. In this book, we are introduced to 3 siblings at their father's funeral. It becomes very apparent that there was no love lost between them and the deceased father. I don't remember any dialogue detailing any happy memories of time with their father.
We are introduced to Gunther, an entrepeneur software designer. His older brother Edgar, who is a guitarist/gambler/rebel, and a younger sister Shirley, who is a PR specialist for a cruise line.

What I liked about the book is that there seemed to be unwavering love for Edgar, who would make a nun want to strangle him. He is lazy, selfish and direction-less.
Shirley found love in the book (I don't want to give up the details), but that was encouraging.
They were blessed with another sibling, which was revealed through the father's will.

What I didn't like about the book;
1) The dialogue was unnatural and didn't flow. For that reason, I just never connected with the characters. They just seemed too robotic, especially Gunther's dealings with Lissa. I don't know any man who would answer or approach that situation with such clarity of thought and language. Also, this whole thing about "harrassment" was too contrived by the author.
2) I didn't feel that the siblings "enjoyed" life. I heard a lot of acceptance for their life as they were the captains of their own ship--they made their own way--but I didn't feel their enjoyment of their choices.
3) The author could have added more depth to the characters. I mean, it got kind of predictable.
4) This book was just not captivating or intriguing. I put the book down several times to tend to other things. I can read a book like this in 1-2 days. The writing was choppy and didn't flow. But the actual plot and storyline had a lot of potential.

This book was just okay for me.

A quick read
By Read In Colour
"When the sun goes down on my life, you'll all come apart like ripped balloons." The wealthy Leon Farrell spoke those words to his three children before he passed, but, as always, he underestimated them. While his oldest, Edgar, does seem to be falling apart at the seams, Shirley and Gunther are doing just fine.

Shunned by their father after the death of their mother while they were still children, the younger Farrell siblings worked their way through college and into successful careers. Shirley handles PR on board cruise ships and Gunther has built a computer software company that's growing by leaps and bounds. Their oldest brother, Edgar, is the only one that seems to be struggling in the wake of his father's death. It's not that he misses their father, he misses the inheritance that he's sure is coming to him.

In his final thumbing of the nose at his kids, Leon died without telling anyone where his will was, including his attorney of over 20 years. Pressed for money to pay off gambling debts, Edgar hires private investigator, Carson Montgomery, to locate the missing document.

What did you like about this book?
It was a quick and easy read.

What didn't you like about this book?
Some of the conversations seemed so unnatural. For example, at the beginning of the book instead of giving a narration about the siblings, the author has them speaking to each other and describing their jobs to the other as if they're strangers meeting for the first time and not brother and sister.

I was also troubled by the dialect in which the author had the maid and nurse speak. It was almost as if because they were the hired help, they weren't capable of speaking in grammatically correct sentences. Every time I read their words, I cringed just a little.

What could the author do to improve this book?
There were whole chapters that served no purpose and, because of that, the book dragged at some points. I also question the nice, neat ending of the book. It's okay to not have a fairytale ending all the time.
