The Hungry Brain: Outsmarting the Instincts That Make Us Overeat, by Stephan J. Guyenet Ph.D.

From an obesity and neuroscience researcher with a knack for engaging, humorous storytelling, The Hungry Brain uses cutting-edge science to answer the questions: why do we overeat, and what can we do about it?

No one wants to overeat. And certainly no one wants to overeat for years, become overweight, and end up with a high risk of diabetes or heart disease--yet two thirds of Americans do precisely that. Even though we know better, we often eat too much. Why does our behavior betray our own intentions to be lean and healthy? The problem, argues obesity and neuroscience researcher Stephan J. Guyenet, is not necessarily a lack of willpower or an incorrect understanding of what to eat. Rather, our appetites and food choices are led astray by ancient, instinctive brain circuits that play by the rules of a survival game that no longer exists. And these circuits don’t care about how you look in a bathing suit next summer.

To make the case, The Hungry Brain takes readers on an eye-opening journey through cutting-edge neuroscience that has never before been available to a general audience. The Hungry Brain delivers profound insights into why the brain undermines our weight goals and transforms these insights into practical guidelines for eating well and staying slim. Along the way, it explores how the human brain works, revealing how this mysterious organ makes us who we are.

Review

“No more a diet book than ‘Anna Karenina’ is a romance novel, but for those interested in the complex science of overeating, it is essential.”
―The New York Times Book Review

"Many people have influenced my thinking on human nutrition and metabolism, but one person stands out as completely altering my understanding of why we get fat. That person is Stephan Guyenet."
― Robb Wolf, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Paleo Solution

“I have followed Stephan Guyenet’s career as a researcher and blogger for over five years and have been impressed with both his objectivity and ability to distill complex information into easily understood explanations.”
― Mark Sisson, author of The Primal Blueprint ―Mark Sisson, author of The Primal Blueprint

"In a world of increasing information overload, Dr. Stephan Guyenet’s research and writing is like a gem in the rough. He has a remarkable ability to distill the latest scientific research and communicate it in a clear and engaging way, and his level-headed, evidence-based approach sets him apart from the pack."
― Chris Kresser, author of the New York Times bestseller, Your Personal Paleo Code

"A remarkable book that approaches health and weight management not through diet or fitness, per se, but by understanding and combating the urge to overeat. This fun, insightful, and important text will appeal to both science-lovers and fitness fanatics."
― Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"Following in the footsteps of Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow, Guyenet looks to the structure of the human brain and how it has evolved over time... A helpful guide offering encouragement to those looking for ways to lead healthier lives."
― Kirkus Reviews

"Blending detailed attention to the neurobiology of appetite and genetics with a sweeping view of human evolutionary biology, Stephan Guyenet provides an exceptionally complete understanding of why, despite the prevailing desire to be lean, so few of us are. The lessons of science, spanning decades, are presented clearly, interpreted fairly, and used as the basis for an eminently sensible set of responses. Illuminating, entertaining, and empowering, The Hungry Brain is highly recommended."
― David L. Katz, M.D., Director of the Yale Prevention Research Center and author of Disease-Proof

―Catherine Shanahan, M.D., author of Deep Nutrition

“Stephan J. Guyenet does a wonderful job explaining what triggers our food cravings and how we can best manage those impulses. The Hungry Brain is necessary reading for anyone interested in optimizing their health and fitness, and for those who consult people on those topics. I highly recommend this book, and commend Stephan Guyenet for this exceptional work.”
―Doug Brignole, Bodybuilding Champion / Former Mr. America and Mr. Universe; Co-author of
Million Dollar Muscle and author of The Physics of Fitness

“If you want to understand why we get fat and how to stay slender, go no further than Stephan Guyenet's The Hungry Brain. Untangling the vast knot of nutrition science using the clear lens of neuroscience, he explains where hunger comes from and why the Western world has been plagued with an epidemic of obesity in the last 40 years. Forget gluttony, forget behavior problems or weakness...we're facing eons of evolutionary pressure leading to unique pressures to overconsume. Guyenet reveals science-based methods to undo this modern trap of overeating and obesity.”
― Emily Deans, M.D., Harvard Medical School instructor of psychiatry and author of the Evolutionary Psychiatry blog

It's not about the calories! It's about the "set point"
By DDavison
This is a ground breaking work. Guyenet has taken dynamite and blown up the simplistic paradigm of “calories in/calories out.” He shows that why we are fat is a much more complicated and nuanced process than previously thought and yet the solution might be incredibly simple. So simple, in fact, most people won’t believe it. He clearly shows that fatness is caused by a “set point” in the core of our brain and any attempt to reduce weight thru simple calorie restriction will most likely fail. Part of the problem is that this “set point” is influenced by how “rewarding” the food is. The better the food tastes the more the “set point” will rise. Which is why diets that focus on “great tasting/low calorie” foods ultimately fail. “Great tasting” foods don’t lower the “set point” and therefore fail in the long run. The solution is to switch to simple, whole (intact fiber), natural foods. Like fruit, vegetables, rice and beans, minimally processed without added sugar, salt and fat. Eating relatively simple, plain, bland food improves your overall health and allows your “set point” to slowly drop. One problem I had with the text was when he talked about “protein” and how it helps people feel “full”. He does not differentiate between plant protein (beans) and animal protein (which is usually loaded with saturated fat). Studies have clearly shown that vegan populations tend to be leaner on balance than meat populations (an issue he does not address). This is a thought provoking book that is fresh, insightful and relevant. This book read along with: The Starch Solution (McDougall), The China Study and Whole (Campbell). The Pleasure Trap (Goldhammer) and How Not to Die (Greger) finally provides us with a clear, practical solution to the puzzle of obesity.

Bad genes? Low metabolism
By Todd Smith
An absolute must read if you're interested in diet/nutrition/obesity. What causes obesity? Too much sugar? Too many carbohydrates? Too much fat? Bad genes? Low metabolism? You can read hundreds if not thousands of articles/books on this subject and get entirely different answers based on "fuzzy science".....or you can read this book. Stephan's book is EASY to read, easy to understand and fascinating! Simply put: It's an unbiased, scientific analysis of what causes us to overeat and what we can do alleviate that desire. I LOVED it!

Overeating 101 (and 201 and 301)
By Kamal Patel
If you follow nutrition researchers online (not diet gurus, but actual researchers), you may already know of Stephan Guyenet.

He's written about some of the most compelling nutrition topics over the past decade or so, and this book fleshes out one of the most interesting: why the non-conscious brain plays such a big part in overeating, and how we can address that. The "we" includes you, your family/friends, clinicians, and public health decision-makers.

Here are some reasons why this book is especially good:

1) It's written clearly
Some well-meaning scientists write books that are overly long, repeating themselves over and over and not having a central thesis or practical recommendations. Stephan has always been a clear writer, and this book reflects that. Plus the language isn't too technical for a layperson. For example:

"The hypothalamus doesn't care what you look like in a bathing suit next summer, and it doesn't care about your risk of developing diabetes in ten years. Its job is to keep your energy balance sheet in the black, and it takes that task very seriously because it was essential for survival and reproduction in the time of our distant ancestors"

2) It discusses actual experiments, in-depth
You cannot truly understand a topic this complex without knowing the history of evidence behind it. This book covers a range of evidence, from bench science experiments, to randomized trials in the US, to observational evidence in indigenous cultures, like the Yanomamo of the Amazon and !Kung San of the Kalahari desert.

3) It has pictures!
The illustrations are actually really well-done and useful.

Overall, this is a great read. If you're a nutrition nerd, I'd highly recommend taking a gander.

Pursuing the Triple Aim: Seven Innovators Show the Way to Better Care, Better Health, and Lower Costs, by Maureen Bisognano, Charles Kenne

Written by the President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and a leading health care journalist, this groundbreaking book examines how leading organizations in the United States are pursuing the Triple Aim—improving the individual experience of care, improving the health of populations, and reducing the per capita cost of care.

Even with major steps forward – including the Affordable Care Act and the creation of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation -- the national health care debate is too often poisoned by negativity. A quieter, more thoughtful, and vastly more constructive conversation continues among health care leaders and professionals throughout the country. Innovative solutions are being designed and implemented at the local level, and countless health care organizations are demonstrating breakthrough remedies to some of the toughest and most expensive challenges in health care.

Pursuing the Triple Aim shares compelling stories that are emerging in locations ranging from Pittsburgh to Seattle, from Boston to Oakland, focused on topics includingimproving quality and lowering costs in primary care; setting challenging goals to control chronic disease with notable outcomes; leveraging employer buying power to improve quality, reduce waste, and drive down cost; paying for care under an innovative contract that compensates for quality rather than quantity; and much more. The authors describe these innovations in detail, and show the way toward a health care system for the nation that improves the experience and quality of care while at the same time controlling costs.

As the Triple Aim moves from being largely an aspirational framework to something that communities all across the US can implement and learn from, its potential to become a touchstone for the work ahead has never been greater. Pursuing the Triple Aim lays out the vision, the interventions, and promising examples of success.

"Clear and focused, with a wealth of insights into how health care organizations have reinvented themselves to achieve unprecedented levels of quality, efficiency, and patient experience. "If your life is dedicated to medical care you should read this book. It offers insight and evidence of what can be: vastly better medical care outcomes, patient and care giver satisfaction, and lower costs. This is not a utopian dream, it is the reality in a growing number of care giving institutions."—Paul O'Neill, former US Secretary of the Treasury

"I have never seen, nor had I dared hope to see, an era in American health care when transformational improvement is more possible than this moment. We have the templates. If you doubt it, I urge you to read this book. You'll learn about exciting innovations that are real, that are happening out there right now. And that can be replicated, with adaptation, anywhere. This book shows what health care looks like that delivers on our urgent social need for success on the Triple Aim: better care, better health, and lower cost through improvement."—Donald Berwick, MD, MPP, former president and CEO, IHI

Off Magazine Street, by Ronald Everett Capps

Fallen from grace and shunned by respectable society, Bobby Long is joyously content drowning his past in cheap hooch and bedding any woman with low standards and high tolerance. His partner, an unproductive writer named Byron Burns, is happy to join him for the long ride down. Their distant salvation is an unwritten manuscript sure to redeem their standing and pride—though both know it’s just a thin reason to get up and go to the bar. When their latest female companion dies in their fleabag hotel room, the duo find themselves putting up her young but futureless daughter, Hanna. Despite their own dishonorable intentions and aging desires, the pair cannot abide her lack of ambition and low expectations for herself. Together, they dust off their teachers’ instincts and conspire to use every means necessary—legal, illegal, fair, and unfair—to get Hanna into college. Fueled by the purest motives they can muster, the men battle the seduction of vice to give Hanna a chance, and discover for themselves that true character doesn’t drown easily.
From the Author
I started writing this book in the late 1980s, and finished it about ten years ago. It is fictional but based largely on my experiences and observations of my friends. I set the story in New Orleans, painting my own interpretation of places I familiarized myself with while my son was a student at Tulane University. The characters are born of a very real conglomerate of the memories I’ve formed over the years, and those memories have become a vehicle to explore things about myself. I used the character Byron Burns, based on the mannerisms of a friend now gone, as a way to express my ambition as a writer. Like the character Hanna, I grew up somewhat disadvantaged, and in many ways her story is mine. I was friends with a man whose name was Bobby Long. His character in the story is loosely based on my observations of his personality, although the novel is in no way meant to depict events in his life—only the lessons I learned from it: that goodness can occur far from conventional morality, and beautiful things can look ugly at first glance. Before my friend Bobby Long died several years ago, he asked my son Grayson to write a song about him. My son titled the song “A Love Song for Bobby Long.” Bobby had said to me many times over the years, “Boy, you’re going to write a book about me one of these days.” And so I have. This is my love song to Bobby Long.

Redemption, simple and honest as the streets.
By Richard Sutton
Down in those neighborhoods, near the levees, when the wind is Easterly, you can smell the river, right down through the drink in your Go-Cup. In the narrow backyards and through the trees, you can find the folks in author Capps' book. They don't really look much like the folks in that movie they made from it.

Now, the movie is a lot of fun, and a good story, but this is really another story. This one's about the folks most of us have pretended not to know, pretended not to "get", or pretended we couldn't see. As unbelievable as the story and characters may appear to be at fi5rst glance, they settle right in and the reader is left with a portrait of the human spirit that's very moving and very intimate.

If you haven't been around the block a few times, or down on your luck, or haven't walked along with a bottle in a bag, don't bother. If you have, you'll find some old friends here and you might even learn a thing or three.

Let's talk about creepy old men
By D. M. Salazar Cayetano
Comparing the book with the movie would not be fair to the movie, which is one of my favorites. The book was a complete disappointment. The old men characters are kind of creepy, always having dirty thoughts about the 16 year old girl who came to live with them, getting to the point of touch her underwear when she wasn't at home and smelled it.
I don't know what annoyed me more, the fact of these old men trying to get a so much younger girl to bed, or the fact that this girl decided to stay with them.
