This book is urgently needed
By C. Moorey
Bishop Kallistos calls this "a timely book" and I agree totally.
From the beginning (his equation of 'repentance' with 'resurrection') to the end (his call for an open and honest debate about issues of authority and abuse in the Church) the book is full of beautiful language and profound ideas. I found, by the end, that I had filled 6 A4 pages with notes and quotes for my own studies!
John Chryssavgis' language is very beautiful and often quite poetic. His paradoxes, puns and other word play are used to good effect to produce new illuminations, for example: "We are called to love, not to pretend; to be holy, not to be 'nice'." "Re-membering = becoming again members of one another".
Ostensibly addressed to clergy and people with spiritual authority, I believe the book is of immense value to any Christian (even non-Orthodox). The chapters on the meaning of repentance contain especially powerful messages.
Fr. John has used his profound knowledge of the desert fathers to relate what may appear as outmoded and archaic ideas of medieval desert asceticism to the modern world. Put another way, he demonstrates by example just how 'modern' these fathers were. (A passing thought - St. Symeon the New Theologian's 'rules' or guidance for spiritual fathers should be engraved on the hearts of all clergy!)
At the very least, the book contains an excellent and easily accessible collection of patristic sources from Basil the Great to Fr. Vasileios of Iveron.
My only 'reservation', though a small one, is that the people who need to read it probably won't, while those who buy it probably don't need it! However, this is probably true of all polemical writing.

It changed my life.. gave me the strength ...
By Amazon Customer
It changed my life.. gave me the strength to go on and start again... Finally, someone in the church that "gets it"... unfortunately, though the people that need to be comforted by its heartfelt words of wisdom and understanding are truly denied access to the depths in its pages.
Indeed, "One plus one equals infinity..."
We need to be reminded that we find strength in sharing our pain and our suffering and letting go.. it will be ok.

Required reading for healers and pastors of souls
By Dan E. Nicholas
I'm almost finished with this book and it is just too good to wait until the end to recommend. I'd call this required reading for healers and pastors of souls inside and outside the church. This deacon has his feet on the ground as a husband and a father as well as a man who loves God and his church. He understands at an earthy level what it means to lead and to follow and to mend a soul; mostly his own. And, his having a PhD. and 20 books in print doesn't seem to hamper him. He communicates well.
....
OK, I posted this review too soon. I just finished the next to the last chapter on Obedience and Authority. Ten pages, a quick read, right? Wrong. I spent three hours prayerfully, meditatively reading and re-reading in one sitting these ten pages. Having lived through the abuse of authority--a bloody church schism wherein two people died and twelve marriages ended in divorce--I had the opportunity to abuse authority myself; in the 70s as a young and foolish novice clergyman and pastor. These pages are vital and soul wrenching. "When the student is ready the teacher will appear." This book has been out 14 years. Evidently I am now just ready to hear this. Thank God for this chapter and Deacon John. My #2 pencil is now a nub, having filled all the margins of this book alongside not a few tears. Lord have mercy on us all. And, a Buddhist friend heard me speak of this title and bought a copy, too.
....
I keep going back to what we say in Liturgy each Sunday before we "shut up and eat God; and on a spoon no less" as one of my retired clergy friends likes to say: "For the healing of body and soul". These are the climax words after an hour and a half of standing in Liturgy. Our Orthodox faith is nothing if not about moving forward and getting some Sacramental soul mending. Chryssavgis takes us there. And he does so as one intimately connected to the Ladder of Divine Ascent and all the desert fathers; and so many other of the key books and thoughts left us by the ancients.
This book was handed to me by Carol at our local Orthodox bookstore, as I'd mentioned our Orthodox Book Club had worked over the Chryssavgis title The Heart Of The Desert wherein he deals with the early ascetic fathers and mothers. I loved also his work on Love, Sexuality and the Sacrament of Marriage. Among his twenty books, his best.
His work here on repentance as a soul mending as a key assignment given to us by God was very helpful. Also the deacon's thoughts on obedience and submission were practical and rich. I'm just getting into his chapters on the misuse of authority and liking what I'm reading.
The pages found here are something you take in on the slow; in reflective moments early in the morning perhaps. With lots of devotional prayer. And coffee. This book works for me not unlike a tool bag for the repair of a broken heart and body and church. "It takes a long time to become a human being." Indeed.
Perhaps you own somewhat of a cracked core of an inner self working to make its way back? This read is for you.
I'd have to warn however that pretty church people should stay away from this book. The depth and light there may bounce off hard and leave some dents. Conversely, if you come to private prayer or Liturgy waiting for those words at the end about healing, about the body being healed and the soul being healed; about all of us being called to do the work to integrate all our parts as a human beings? Then you will profit from hours set aside for this little book. Also, I loved the footnotes here. More folks need to readd, review, and promote this focused, helpful, well researched work.
