Tells you what you need to know--but you can't skim this book & pass the exam. You have to do the work.

Software testing is a complex and constantly evolving field. But having some well-recognized certifications is a good way to help encourage your continued employability as a software tester and manager of software test teams.

Advanced Software Testing, Volume 2, 2nd Edition, focuses on showing you how to obtain an International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) certification as an advanced test manager. The 519-page book is well-written and lays out what test managers should know to gain advanced skills in test estimation, test planning, test monitoring, and test control.

It also emphasizes knowing how to define overall testing goals and strategies for the systems you and your team are testing. And it gives you strategies for preparing for and passing the 65-question Advanced Test Manager qualification test that is administered by ISTQB member boards and exam providers.

This second edition has been updated to reflect the ISTQB's Advanced Test Manager 2012 Syllabus. The book takes a hands-on, exercise-rich approach, and it provides experience with essential how-tos for planning, scheduling, and tracking important tasks.

Advanced Software Testing focuses on a variety of key processes that a software test manager must be able to handle, including describing and organizing the activities necessary to select, find and assign the right number of resources for testing tasks. You also must learn how to organize and lead testing teams, and how to manage the communications among testing teams' members and between testing teams and all the other stakeholders. And you will need to know how to justify your testing decisions and report necessary information both to your superiors and members of your teams.

As for taking the complicated qualifications test, the author urges: "Don't panic! Remember, the exam is meant to test your achievement of the learning objectives in the Advanced Test Manager syllabus." In other words, you cannot simply skim this book and then take the exam. You must spend significant time on the learning exercises, the sample questions and the ISTQB glossary first.

This book was very helpful in my study for the ISTQB Advanced test manager certification. I used this book along with the RBCS exam prep that they offer to help my pass the exam. I recommend anyone interested in taking the ISTQB ATM to use this book.

I would caution readers that this is not a book that you will feel good about reading

While this book deals with many disturbing subject matters (including child abuse, child sexual abuse, and voyeurism, just to name a few), I felt that it was worth the read. I would caution readers that this is not a book that you will feel good about reading. It doesn't have a happy ending, or even a particularly just ending. However, I felt that Jack Ketchum did an excellent job writing this book. You almost feel like you're part of the problem, taking a backseat in observing the abuse taking place. I realize this sounds awful, and I don't think this book is for everyone. However, as someone who works with the victims of child abuse on a daily basis, I feel that this book is a necessary and useful depiction of how easily people can become abusers.

Excellently Written but too disturbing for me.

I couldn't finish it. I was looking for more of a classic horror scary book. This book wasn't scary in the traditional sense, it was just very disturbing in the whole "humans are the real monsters" sense. I got about half way through it before I had to stop. It reminded me of "A child called it" honestly and that book was disturbing too. Ruth's descent into madness was interesting but I couldn't stomach the vile and evil thing she did and allowed the kids to do to Meg. For what appears to be no reason (granted the reasoning may become apparent in later chapters). It saddens me that this was based on a true story and I'm sure things like this or worse have happened to people but I can't stomach it. 3.5 stars as it was excellently written just too intense/disturbing for me.

Interesting and disturbing read.

I'm not really sure what I can say that others haven't already said. This book is a great [yet horrifying] take on a famous murder. The mob mentality aspect of this crime has haunted and fascinated me for years and since I already loved Jack Ketchum's work, I had to pick up this book as well.

I personally love Ketchum's writing. I'm not an authority on writing, I'm a terrible writer myself, but I think he's very talented and he obviously cares about writing coherently and descriptively.

I rated it 4 stars because it's not completely accurate to the true story it tells. It embellishes and changes some events, and if I recall correctly, even adds a couple that didn't occur in life. That said, I realize it's not meant to be an autobiography or anything, but I feel that the crime was terrible enough without exaggerating it to be even more unthinkable. It somehow cheapens or trivializes the events by showing how much worse they could have been.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Really, none of Ketchum's work is, but it's worth repeating. You will not be able to finish this book if graphic violence disturbs you.

CAP saves the day

I have never actively followed comic book super heroes but no need to worry when I picked up this book The Virtues of Captain America: Modern-Day Lessons on Character from a World War II Superhero by Mark D. White.
Not only must Mark White be one of the most popular ethic professors but he has a canny ability to take complex concepts and boil them down to understandable language. The ethic courses I took in college were dry and full of boring philosophies but White makes them applicable to the lens in which we see the world.
After giving a good over view of the prevailing ethical framework, White breaks down the world of super heroes and centers his work on Captain America giving a good example. He notes in the book that we don’t really need to reinvent the wheel, just learn how to navigate it on new terrain.
This book on Cap prompt me to out and check out the new second big screen Captain American movie. In this work White also covers the gambit of the strength and weaknesses from other know superhero characters from Batman (which he wrote a book on), Ironman, and Spiderman.
Reading the book not only combines the intellectual rigor of the study of ethics but also is a fun way to think about these superheroes in a different light.
This book is great to use in a class, work setting, or anyone who wants to strengthen their ethical compass or simply enjoy reading about one of America’s great super heroes, Captain America.

Good overview of Cap

There are lots of things we can learn from this fictional character and apply to our real lives. This book is well written. It's clear and easy to read. It's intelligent, thoughtful and heavily annotated. Mr. White seems to be smart, knowledgable and pleasant. One thing that might improve it is a chapter on how the Great Depression influenced Steve Rogers. There's an excellent online essay about this by historian Steven Attewell.

The major flaw in this book is White's attempt to accept and justify the changes in Cap's morals over the past decade. White's ineffectual defense of the change in Cap's behavior (regarding torture, killing, war and letting others do his dirty work) indicates that there is no defense for Cap behaving this way.

Why do we think circumstances are so unique in today's world? This has probably been an excuse to behave amorally since humanity began. Cruelty has always been cruelty, deceit has always been deceit, war has always been war, torture has always been torture, killing has always been killing. If Cap could fight Nazi's without compromising his integrity why can't he do it now? Is there a more insidious evil than Nazis?

White says Cap is justified in condoning torture and killing because "one person now has the potential to do much more harm than entire armies could...with much less chance of being detected beforehand." How is this different from most of the super-villians Cap has fought for the past 70 years?

The reason Cap's new morals are wrong is found in White's own words- Cap is no longer "making sure every other possible option is considered, discovered or developed first". He's no longer thinking out of the box. It almost seems like White doesn't agree with Cap's behavior over the past ten years, but he makes a half-hearted defense anyways. If you want an example of how Cap can still behave as he always has in a more realistic, modern setting check out Reiber's Marvel Knight's stories (which White himself sights in his extensive and excellent notes).

When a hero's been around a long time and passed through the hands of many writers, the true version of the character has to be whatever general traits can be traced throughout all those years. Traits that have appeared rarely should be disregarded when discussing what a character is really like.

Some heroes teach you to do good in spite of your imperfections. Cap teaches you to do good in spite of humanities imperfections. I don't want Steve Rogers to be more like us. I want him to inspire us to be more like him. Cap was always about "not sinking to their level". As he said in issue #241: "No man can be denied their rights, or else none of us has any rights! If you fight on their terms you're no better than they are!"

Superhero stories are modern myths and morality plays. Their applicability - what they say about humanity and about right & wrong - is more important than whether they have complete reality. Especially since complete realism is impossible when your premise is a person with fantastical abilities running around in costume. If realism is really so important people would complain more when heroes outrun explosions, run through hails of bullets unscathed and survive impossible amounts of destruction.

Being in a situation where you might have to consider killing someone is not very realistic, or applicable, for 99.999% of us. Most police men and women spend entire careers preventing and solving crimes without having to kill anyone. A situation where a hero truly can't avoid killing a villain is not impossible but should, realistically, be extremely rare. It should also be written for a very good reason.

In a democracy, unlike a totalitarian state, we believe in a fair trial by jury. A hero shouldn't kill if the current threat is over- even if it means the bad guy might return to menace society in the future. If you want to prevent a villain from future actions then imprisonment will do that without having to kill them. Many of the ways heroes kill villains in stories now-a-days would make them murderers. Isn't that what the bad guys do, murder people? And don't even get me started on torture!

Contriving plots where the heroes take the same actions that bad guys do means that the only difference between the good guys and the bad guys is who wins. But this is totally incorrect; villains are villains because they do heinous things. If a hero does heinous things then he or she is not a hero. I can appreciate anti-heroes, but I still look for my heroes to instruct and inspire me.

Being a hero is about doing the right thing regardless of reward or punishment. Evil, at its most basic level, is a lack of empathy. So a hero must, above all else, have compassion for all life everywhere. This sort of hero is not unrealistic; they exist in real life. Normal, everyday people aren't getting into fist fights with the minions of the Red Skull, but they are doing what's right for the greater good instead of what's easy.

It saddened me greatly when they changed Steve Rogers into the "Super Soldier". Working for government intelligence? Carrying a gun? How do you take a character who spent 40 years spouting how he was against killing and turn him into a killer? I agree with Cap's creator Joe Simon who said Cap shouldn't be carrying a gun. Steve Rogers came from an America that had been against a large standing army for 160 years. They were willing to fight when absolutely necessary but they didn't worship the military like we do now. A militarized Cap no longer represents all of us as he was intended by Simon & Kirby.

Everyone always figured that, even in the fantasy world of comics, Cap might have killed during W.W. II. It was also equally possible that, being a fantasy, Cap didn't kill during W.W. II. It was obvious to everyone that killing during a war and killing during peacetime are considered two very different things. It was obvious that Cap was against killing accept when necessary during a just war. It was also obvious that he wasn't going to fight in any of our less-just wars like Vietnam (which is why he should never have been written as having fought in Iraq).

Why Marvel felt Cap needed to start carrying a gun during the W.W. II is beyond me. Think about it: you're writing stories about costumed characters who have fantastical abilities and you say "hey this unrealistic character needs to realistically carry a gun." Kind of like worrying that the woodsman in "Little Red Riding Hood" shouldn't be able to cut grandma (alive) out of the stomach of the talking wolf that had successfully impersonated her- because boy that would just be unrealistic!

You could certainly make a case, within the fantasy world of comics, that art-student Steve Rogers wasn't comfortable with guns and he found that his shield was as effective as a gun at stopping his enemies. Before he went off to fight in the war Cap shouldn't have been shooting the fascist spies he was bringing to justice anyways.

If you're going to change the basics of who a character is why not just write about a different character? Kids need a compassionate, selfless Cap who's top priority is the common good. They need to see that heroism is not about militarism, not about blindly following orders or about being the meanest or the sneakiest. Kids need the Cap who's against lying, killing and torture. The one who never gives up searching for the option that allows him to do what's right not what's selfish or expedient.

A Comprehensive Commentary On Captain America's Character

I enjoyed "The Virtues of Captain America" immensely. I always have multiple books on the go at any one time but once I started reading this book I steamed through it quickly. I was very impressed by the narrative arc the author maintained throughout and the extensive use of carefully chosen and illustrative examples from real-life philosophers and the fictional superheroes in the Marvel Universe and beyond.

I specifically enjoyed the idea of examining ethics and ethical perspectives from different historical periods and the concept of honor and "right action" that was explored in detail.

I didn't agree with everything I read, particularly the discussion around implications for patriotism and nationalism but I enjoy books that can both entertain and challenge my assumptions. Mark White's book exceeded my expectations on those two fronts.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Captain America stories and for everyone who has any interest in the broader impact of comicbooks and superheroes on our society.

About the Author
Hanna Karlzon is an Ume�, Sweden-based illustrator and creator of the best-selling coloring books, Dagdr�mmar and Sommarnatt, previously published in Sweden. She creates elaborately detailed images using India ink to detail pictures from her own imagination and loves to draw flowers, forests, houses, and animals. She draws her inspiration from the natural world that surrounds her studio in northern Sweden and adds in some art nouveau, punk rock, and often a hint of ‘70s design to the mix.

Well worth the wait!

Magical Dawn is a reprint of Magisk Gryning, in Hanna Karlzon's home country of Sweden. This is printed on the same quality paper. I pre-ordered this book months ago and the wait was well worth it! Hanna Karlzon's books are all excellent books.The quality of the paper, and the design of the book, hard-covered, makes it a true gem to have an any colorists library. Another thing that I like about her books, is that they have over 90 pages of coloring. Imagine that! You have quality, price, and amazing content, which together makes Magical Dawn a completely fantastic book. I had to color at least one picture immediately,

Absolutely gorgeous!

Gorgeous book! I love all of her books and this one did not disappoint. Paper quality is great as always. The pictures are amazing. I love that she added in some different elements this time with potion bottles, and little creatures like a flying toad. I highly recommend this book as well as her other books.

About the Author
Professor Robert Poole is West Riding Professor of Microbiology at the University of Sheffield. He has >35 years’ experience of bacterial physiology and bioenergetics, in particular O2-, CO- and NO-reactive proteins, and has published >300 papers (h=48, 2013). He was Chairman of the Plant and Microbial Sciences Committee of the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and has held numerous grants from BBSRC, the Wellcome and Leverhulme Trusts and the EC. He coordinates an international SysMO systems biology consortium. He published pioneering studies of bacterial oxidases and globins and discovered the bacterial flavohaemoglobin gene (hmp) and its function in NO detoxification He recently published the first systems analyses of responses of bacteria to novel carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CORMs) and is a world leader in NO, CO and CORM research.

Jolanta Benal never had dogs until she was persuaded to adopt a stray in 1998. The Dog Trainer in print at last! Thank you!!!

Jolanta Benal has put together a fine comprehensive book on dog training and behavior. She does a great job of mixing theory and practice, with an eye always to the science behind the methods, and the general great fun it is to live with and train a dog. I am a first time dog owner whose adoptee has caused me any number of headaches and feet that are bloody stumps from all the walking, and I have to say if it weren't for Ms. Benal and her contemporaries who look at things from a scientific perspective, I may well have given up hope on my little guy improving much, or I'd be off with a voodoo doll or something, trying some magical cure for all my ills.

Listeners to her Quick and Dirty Tips podcast will be familiar with much of the material in this book, but it is well organized, and put together in an easily digestible and quickly accessible format, which is very helpful. Those familiar with the podcasts will also feel like they are sitting down with a good friend, whose sincere tones and clever wit are ever present and ready to help. I can't tell you how many times, while reading the book and she is discussing an owner's reaction, I would say "That's me!" or a dog's issue, I would turn to my dog, and say "Hey! She's talking about you!"

As must be the case, the book offers no magical cures and no mystical techniques to solve or communicate with your dog. It offers, rather, a detailed discussion of what dogs actually do, the best we understand about why, and how we can deal with it, modify behavior and understand that dogs are real beings, just like us, and always with a sound, scientific foundation. In addition she discusses all aspects of life with a dog, and the long road to teaching her/him manners, and how to deal with problem issues.

The few gripes I have about the book are more about dog books in general, or, perhaps more precisely put, about general dog books. The problem is that there are a LOT of general dog books from gifted trainers and writers, and I have to slog through pages and pages about puppies (for example), when I don't have a puppy! I will likely never have a puppy (and if I ever do, I'll buy a puppy book!) I have a 2 year old adolescent rescue dog who is energy insane! With all the emphasis out there on adult adoptions and rescues (I have a hard time calling my dog a "rescue" as he's so cute and playful there's no way someone wasn't going to adopt him. I think of "rescues" as the saving of a dog on death row), I think we need more books that address more specific issues dealing with rescues, and that are a little less general. But here, Ms. Benal succeeds as much as possible, with constant references to other fantastic resources for those of us with more specific problems. But I know she's so knowledgeable that I would love to see her put out a series of very specific books (or even mini-books < 100 pages, but larger than pamphlets, which never have enough background) that address specific issues. For example, she points out repeatedly that people like me need to give their dog a good hour of aerobic exercise first thing in the morning, which I think serves mostly as a warning on adopting a high-energy dog, but I already have one, and I could use some tips on how the heck to get that hour of aerobic exercise when there are precious few off leash areas in my town and fewer that are "open" first thing in the morning, and even if I risked brushes with the law, his recall isn't honed well enough yet that I trust him off leash in the great outdoors, and it could be a year before it is rock solid. How about tips on training a dog run while I ride a bike? Special fetch/keep away tricks that keep them going in the smallish back yard? I can't even imagine how tough apartment dwellers would have it. Anyway, all of these gripes are mentioned only in hopes that we'll see a lot more from Ms. Benal.

Again, this is a great and entertaining read and reference whether you are new to modern dog training methods or want a refresher. I can't thank you enough for all the help your book and podcasts have been to me!

This has a place on every bookshelf

This is a great book. The writing is good (some borderline witty snark, at times, but listeners to her podcast are familiar with this), the information is both experience & science-based, and she does a good job giving the dedicated dog person the tools to create their own solutions. This is not a step-by-step hand-holding book which you can use to look up and fix problems; rather it's got general advice on everything from choosing a dog to where to turn when you feel overwhelmed. There are some step-by-steps in the book as well, but I think the main value of this book is in teaching you how to communicate and teach your own dog. If you're dedicated to teaching your dog, this book is the "teach a man to fish" method that you're looking for.

Unlike many authors, she doesn't ignore the existence of small dogs and she also takes time to mention the frustrations that people can experience while training. She confronts outdated training techniques and myths head-on and without apology and for that alone I applaud this book. Ms. Benal has a habit of pointing out things that should be obvious to everyone but somehow aren't, so in the end she's not convincing you to see things in another way, you're just going with what makes the most sense to you.

For anyone outside of the NYC area, Jolanta Benal is well-known for taking on some of the worst cases of aggression, OCD, etc. She's been "in the trenches" with the worst cases, and based on the references cited in this book, apparently spends the rest of the time reading scientific journal articles. As someone in the sciences myself, I appreciate Ms. Benal for having a science-based approach that has been extensively field tested. Any flak she gets from those still promoting "dominance theory" should be seen in the light of both the science and the results.

Hands down, best training guide out there

I have read more training books than I care to count in dealing with my slightly difficult puppy and this one is head and shoulders above the rest in tone, information, and honest experience with dogs. So many books written by trainers come off as formal and stuffy. This one is honest, smart, and you can tell the author has been incredibly humbled and impacted by her experiences with dogs over the years. The "Quick and Dirty Tips" have been immensely helpful and I imagine the special sections on dealing with small dogs are great for owners of smaller pups. All in all, I would recommend this book over any of the more well known books (Ian Dunbar, Cesar Millan, Victoria Stilwell, etc.)
