About the Author

Larry Rockwood is Professor of Biology and Environmental Science and Policy, and Chairman of the Department of Biology at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, USA.� He earned his B.S. degree in Biopsychology and his Ph.D. degree in Biology at the University of Chicago. His early research was conducted in Costa Rica where he studied foraging patterns in leaf-cutting ants.� More recently he has collaborated on a variety of projects from human-coyote conflicts to aspects of avian ecology and plant ecology. He has been teaching introductory ecology, population ecology and tropical ecology for almost 40 years. In 2014 Dr Rockwood was presented with the David J. King Award in recognition of 'outstanding contributions to enhancing teaching and learning' by George Mason University.

Wright the Man is Chronicled Here

Wright the man is chronicled here, in one of the two best biographies of the architectural superstar. One would also want to read Brendan Gill's "Many Masks" as a companion to Ms Secrest's treatment of F Ll W - just to get the harmonizing flavors of opinion.

Ms Secrest does magnificent research and shares it in a narrative that flows easily and keeps one's attention. Her information about Wright's family tree, as well as the family background of his wives and Mrs. Cheney, is more thoroughly presented than I have seen elsewhere.

One must not expect a thorough critique of Wright's buildings here -- there are too many works to be considered and there are many other resources, old and new, for such explorations. "In the Nature of Materials" leaps to mind. However, this book does flesh out the man and in some ways dispels some of the outlandish tales and outright fabrications about his life, toward which Wright was oft inclined.

It should be noted that Secrest is one of the Wright biographers who mistakenly limit the contributions of Isabel Roberts, who was a draughtsman/architect in her own right. She defines Roberts' roll simply as: "Isabel Roberts, secretary ". She cannot be faulted too much, having swallowed the red herring presented by Frank Lloyd Wright himself when writing about the Oak Park "...studio adjoining my home, where the work I had then to do enabled me to take in several draughtsmen and a faithful secretary, Isabel Roberts..." In future, Wright biographers would be wise to consult research done by John A. Dalles presented in his article, "The Pathbreaking Legacy of Ryan and Roberts", in "Reflections", the journal of the Historical Society of Central Florida, Summer 2009; pages 8 and 9.

You may wish to read Wright's disingenuous "An Autobiography" (1943) as well as some of the family books - "The Valley of the God-Almighty Joneses: Reminiscences of Frank Lloyd Wright's Sister, by Maginel Wright Barney, 1986, and his son, John Lloyd Wright's "My Father Who Is On Earth", G P Putnam Sons, NY, 1946. But consider this a mostly reliable guide to Mr. Wright's long and theatrical life.

Precious little discussion of Wright's work...

Secrest's "biography" focuses exclusively on the personal life of Wright, and to that end it seems fairly complete. Secrest attempts to explain Wright's inflated sense of self, his drive to succeed and his willingess to use others as means to his ends by reflecting on his Welsh background, his family's history in Wisconsin and his relationships with his immediate family, particularly his mother. My complaint is that Secrest does not carry this analysis over to his architecture - most of his works receive a paragraph or less. I was hoping for a biography of Wright that placed his work in an socio-historical framework as well as accounting for his personality. Secrest briefly mentions how Wright bristled at being called a pre-modernist and how much of a romanticist he was, but she only mentions this to elucidate Wright's personal interactions with others. If you're looking for more info that places Wright's work in a historical or theoretical framework, look somewhere else.

A beautiful edition of a liturgical classic

The traditonal Mass developed over the centuries and comes down to us with many different layers of meaning. Contemplating them and the treasures they surround and make present is a lifetime's work. The Greatest Book on the Holy Mass Ever Written!

Dom Prosper Gueranger was one of the most significant Catholic priests in France. Ordained in 1830 at the restoration of the Bourbon dynasty in France, he begun the Liturgical Movement but not as creativity or experimenation or even innovations of the Sacred Liturgy of the Roman Rite, but rather a preservation and reiteration of Our unchanging Holy Mother [the Catholic] Church and her sacred traditions passed down by the Apostles to their line of successors.

He explains thoroughly in simplest language all the parts of the traditional Roman liturgy according to the Missal of Pope St. Pius V prior to the changes of the 1960s before, during, and after the Second Vatican Council.

In essence, this book will help Catholics whether of the Roman (Latin) or Eastern rites, or even non-Catholics, to understand the signficance of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass along with its rubrics and ceremonies that date back to the time of the Apostles and that of the primitive Church during persecutions under the Roman Empire.

No Catholic should be without this book. And indeed, Holy Mass is indeed scriptural as Dom Prosper Gueranger quotes the Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome in Latin and not in the vernacular to cite examples of references to the Eucharistic Sacrifice in the Holy Bible.

Prosper Louis Pascal Gu�ranger (1805-1875) re-established the Benedictine order in France, repaired that country's relationship with the Holy See, and fought against Gallicanism, Jansenism, Naturalism and anti-ecclesiastical Liberalism; a true warrior for Christ and His Church.

His work fell into disfavor with liturgical scholars during the two decades leading up to Vatican II for its supposed "romanticism" and "neomediaeval irrelevancy"; shocking, isn't it, that modernist, rationalist academics agitating against tradition would trash Gu�ranger?

If you're not up on Latin, I recommend keeping one of the inexpensive Latin Mass booklets nearby for help with translating the Latin references. Each part of the Mass is given a wonderful explanation of its meaning, symbolism and origins, including the rubrics (the instructions to the priest and the servers.) He takes us through the entire High Mass, explaining that the only way to understand the Low Mass is in the context of the High. Gu�ranger was obviously a true student of Church history, but tells it in a very engaging way - neither condescending nor overly-academic.

I found this book invaluable. One of the features is a full reprint of the Ordinary of the Mass at the end (making up about an 8th or so of the book), and side by side with it is a translation; but not exactly: in many places, it falls (nicely, I think) into more of a meditation or paraphrase of the Mass - notes, if you will, by a student of the liturgy.

The translation by Rev. Shepherd is extremely readable. This book is small (4"x6"), with sturdy, leather-covered boards and a gold ribbon. I can't think of anything I didn't like about it. If you're planning on attending the Latin Mass, or have been attending and want to understand it better, or are simply curious, this wonderful book is a must-have.

About the Author
John Merriman is the Charles Seymour Professor of History at Yale University. A specialist in nineteenth century French history, Merriman earned his Ph. D at the University of Michigan. He is the author of many books, including The Margins of City Life: Explorations on the French Urban Frontier, 1815–1851; Red City: Limoges and the French Nineteenth Century; The Agony of the Republic: The Repression of the Left in Revolutionary France, 1848–1851; and, most recently, The Stones of Balazuc: A French Village in Time (Norton, 2002). He regularly teaches the survey of modern European history at Yale.

Although this text covers a lot of time (generally the Renaissance through twentieth century Europe) this professor has a focus on the nineteenth century. Comparatively, he spends the most amount of time discussing this time period. I would recommend this to people who are keenly interested specifically in Europe during the 19th century. It describes the changes that an emerging middle class (from the Industrial Revolution) in Europe caused with respect to the Old Regime. If you want more information on the 20th century read "Europe in the Twentieth Century" by Paxton.

The book itself is fantastic - a good balance of historical facts and anecdotes that make for good reading. It's been an invaluable resource as I prepare to teach this curriculum to high school students next year. The book had a few pages falling out and more marking than I would have expected for the "good" quality mark, but the markings are, at least, intelligent. On the whole, no complaints.
