About the Author

R.G.G. Cattell is chair of the ODMG and a DistinguishedEngineer in the Java Software Division of Sun Microsystems.He has been with Sun for fifteen years and before that worked forten years at Xerox PARC and at Carnegie Mellon University. He isbest known for his contributions to database systems, particularlyobject-oriented databases and database user interfaces. He is theauthor of fifty papers and five books on database systems and othertopics.

A valuable resource

A well-written, concise reference covering a diverse range of topics that will be of interest to all who know the frustration of cramming complex OO systems into relational tables.
From a complete design pattern for Object and Object Relational database systems, to design patterns for declarative language symantics; from C++ and Java to SmallTalk bindings; from BNF grammars to compiler models; the book proved invaluable at overcoming the myriad problems presented to the developer implementing an object-relational DMBS.
As a direct result of this reference work I have implemented ORDBMS systems in Java and (can you believe it) JavaScript. The JavaScript implementation provides a complete persistence layer for JavaScript objects running in an ASP environment.
As a result, systems with complex data relationships that would curl the hair on a relational database programmer's head have been implemented simply and with the minimum development time.
I await with anticipation emergence of the JDO from the work of the ODMG.

Dennis Kimbro is the author of four books, including Think and Grow Rich: A Black Choice, and a certified Napoleon Hill Science of Success trainer and leadership coach. A Great Read!

I just finished The Wealth Choice. The reason I gave this book 5 stars is it really gives you practical steps to follow to become wealthy. It details the challenges as well as the triumphs. It reminds you that it's not where you start, it's where you finish. I love the part about faith in the book. It encouraged me to utilize my faith resources on my road to financial freedom. I know now, what I need to do to create wealth in my life and now I'm ready. The principals will be my daily tools.

Excellent! Really helps you see wealth from a different perspective.

I had no idea how LONG the book was, and have not read it fully as a result. I rate it 5 stars because I only needed to read the first few chapters to get the benefits. It outlined very clearly about the wealthy and the true principles around creating it. Something many law of attraction books miss is the hard work factor. I also enjoyed the reality of having to make it a choice. After reading it I had a God experience of making that choice, then I had my best month in my baby business ever. I am still getting that choice refined and cultivated and it has not been fun really learning how to pay attention to my money fully and acting frugally. It is a true inner transformation is constantly developing as a result of that choice. To expect it to happen over night, is to set yourself up for failure and a get rich scheme. Not this book, it's exciting to know that I too can be wealthy if I make the choice. In the African American population, I believe it to be a duty!

The Three R's is a great book for any parent. In fact, I was so impressed I am ordering additional copies for my sisters and best friends. I apologize in advance for the length of this review.

Someone complained that the book "...did not teach you how to teach your child..." or "...short and rambling...workbooks were better..." and while they are entitled to have their opinion maybe they missed the point. I have had the books two (2) days now and based on the advice (based on theories) I am very impressed with the information the book does put forward.
1. The book describes different methods, especially those of the standard preschool and primary school and critiques methods based on philosophies, theories, and research. In some instances, she said "...the fact that they can does not necessarily mean they should." and provides reasons to support her methods.
2. The book seems logically laid out, building information in each section as a teacher would any student. And could be read specifically for particular child's age as the methods are in progressive steps/stages.
3. This book is not a workbook. The book encourages parents to develop an attitude of education in everyday life with their child(ren): "Use real life for teaching."; "Real life is daily. It is close at hand. It offers the best learning opportunities your child will ever have."; "Pushing does not work"; "...begin...at a young age...". It also mentioned that the strategies taken by workbooks use a backward approach (i.e. with reference to learning modes) and could lead to frustration of the child.

I purchased the book because I wanted my daughter to start doing Math: 2+3=5. But having read the book, I realize that this stage is the last stage of the learning modes (symbolic mode) and as a preschooler I should get her more involved and comfortable with counting and moving real objects (manipulative mode). "Symbolic thinking doesn't happen overnight. We need to give our children time....We should not start arithmetic teaching with 3+2=____." [lol...exactly what I had planned]. It mentioned teaching addition and subtraction initially with numbers whose sum is not more than 6.

The book talks about pushing children beyond their capability to satisfy the parents' ego "It usually is not the baby who shows any readiness or eagerness to learn to read early, but it is too often an over-anxious mother pushing for it.".

I remember my Mom getting sea shells for my sisters and I to count because we could not afford workbooks (or even have the variety present in today's market). We also got paper to write almost endlessly, we were writing scribbles! At the end of each day my Dad would go through our writing and find letters and ask us to identify them if we could. Seems their approach was closer to the point! The book also suggests everyday activities for the parent and child that would help build the skills in The Three R's, with guidance on how to increase difficulty with mastery. I usually give my daughter a jockey-back from the bed to the living room on mornings. From my readings last night, I learnt that "Every day a portion of our children's conversations and problems should involve numbers and other arithmetic concepts: big, small, long, high. Comparisons. Measurements. Counting." So this morning she had to count down from 5 to 1 for me to `lift off' the bed and from 1 to 5 for me to `land' on the couch. And yes in preschool they practice counting from 1 to 30 and I won't change that, but I can change how she feels about The Three R's from home.

I have not read the entire book - my daughter is in preschool starting Grade K next term. So I read sections applicable to her age and just a little ahead so I can know what signs (questions, behavior, etc.) may be signaling that she is ready to move on.

I hope the publisher is not annoyed that I used so many quotes, but I was impressed.

As a homeschooling mom that (like many homeschooling moms) feels a bit like I'm messing up, I love this book! Ruth Beechick uses clear, easy to follow, common sense instructions to teaching your child(ren). I have not read all of the book yet, nor implemented all of the advice, but what I have seen so far is good. She uses common sense, sometimes old-fashioned, time-tested methods. This probably leans most to classical homeschooling but really anyone could pick and choose what to use. It is not by any means a "curriculum". It is a guide to follow. We all taught our kids to speak and probably write their name. This gives the natural progression to teaching reading and learning to write. It also follows with arithmetic as well. Overall, I am very pleased and I am anticipating ordering her follow up book for 4th grade and above.

Best Home School Start there is!

This was a gift from me ( a 25 year homeschool mom) to a brand new homeschool mom. They used to be 3 separate books but I like that they have been bound together I started my homeschool journey with The Three R's, art supplies and a library card. That is all you really need. It's been a long road but those are the days I treasure most with my kids.

Babylonian Myth and Magic concerns the history of Babylon, particularly its inception and development. This tome describes a part of the early history of Mesopotamia, including how and why history was rewritten as well as getting into the spiritual practices of the priesthood established at the time and some influences that still linger to this day. It's a fascinating read that demonstrates the origins of some spiritual paradigms and how they evolved over time to become the religions we know today.

About the Author
Haraldur Sigurdsson is emeritus professor at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island in the United States of America. He has worked on volcanic processes and the geochemistry of volcanic rocks for over fifty years. His studies have in part been focused on the impact of volcanic activity on human populations, especially his work on Vesuvius in Italy, Tambora in Indonesia, El Chichon in Mexico and studies of deadly gas bursts from Cameroon crater lakes. He has also studied the global environmental effects of meteorite impacts, such as the one that marks the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary. His books include Melting the Earth, accounting for the evolution of ideas about formation of magmas and the origin of volcanic eruptions. Haraldur is currently director of the Volcano Museum in Stykkisholmur, Iceland.

Bruce Houghton is the Gordon MacDonald Professor in Volcanology at University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hawaiian State Volcanologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He is also Science Director at the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center at University of Hawaii. Previously he had a career of twenty five years as a volcanologist in New Zealand, culminating in leading the scientific response to the 1995-96 eruption of Ruapehu volcano. Bruce has published over 220 research papers in international journals and has worked in Alaska, Chile, El Salvador, Greece, Hawaii, Iceland, Italy, Germany, Nicaragua, Thailand and New Zealand.

Steve McNutt is a Professor in the School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida (USF). He has worked on volcanic processes using seismology, infrasound, and lightning instruments for over 35 years. He worked half time for the Alaska Volcano Observatory from 1991-2012 and was closely involved in monitoring efforts for eruptions at Spurr, Pavlof, Shishaldin, Augustine, Okmok, Kasatochi, and Redoubt volcanoes. He coordinates seismology research at USF, and presently supervises 3 graduate students and a Post-Doc. His research interests include: 1) studies of source and propagation effects for volcanic tremor, low-frequency events, and explosion earthquakes; 2) volcanic hazards assessments in Alaska, California, and Central America; 3) the mechanical behavior of volcanoes, including periodicity of eruptions, and the effects of earth tides, sea level variations, and tectonic stresses on triggering eruptive activity; 4) volcano infrasound; and 5) volcanic lightning. From July 1999 to July 2007 he served as Secretary-General for the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior.

Hazel Rymer is presently the Dean and Director of Studies in the Faculty of Science and Profesor of Environmental Volcanology.

Hazel has developed and championed the use of microgravity as a tool for monitoring active volcanoes. She has used this method to identify sub-surface processes at calderas in a state of unrest and at persistently active volcanoes and this has given geoscientists considerable insight into the range of mechanisms responsible for initiating and sustaining volcanic activity. The technique Hazel pioneered is now the standard method for gravity monitoring on volcanoes; it remains the only way to quantify the sub-surface mass changes that occur before, during and after eruptions.

John Stix has studied active volcanoes for 26 years, specializing in volcanic gases, eruption mechanisms, and the impact of volcanic activity. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in volcanology, natural hazards, and environmental geology. He also is involved in field courses, where he exposes students to hands-on observations of natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and floods. He has been involved in many training courses and workshops in Canada, the US, and Latin America to teach volcanology. He has collaborated extensively with colleagues in Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Ecuador in volcano studies and volcanic hazards. From 2003 to 2010 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of Volcanology, the leading international journal related to the study of volcanoes and volcanism. He is currently part of an international team to drill into an active silicic magma body beneath Krafla volcano in Iceland.

Great Memoir

A few weeks ago i read Acceptable Loss for the second time after first reading it several years ago. Over the last ten years ive read well over a 100 memoirs written by guys who served in WW2 and Vietnam and in my opinion this book ranks up there as one of the better ones. Its fast paced and interesting yet its not just a book of war stories, in comparison with my other fav vietnam memoirs like Chickenhawk, Ghosts and Shadows, Baptism, Killing Zone, Father Soldier Son and Hundred Miles it too delves a few layers deeper than your average memoir in describing the physical and psychological toll combat in an unpopular war has on a young man. After finsishing the book while down the jersey shore on vacation this past summer i made it a point to see for the first time the n.j. vietnam veterans memorial during my trip north on the garden state parkway and find the name of the ranger who was killed while on patrol with Kregg towards the begining of the book. .... As for the book i highly recommend it to military buffs and many others who may be thinking about reading a first person account of the war.

A reality check

Kregg Jorgenson should be recognized as one of the finest authors on the Vietnam war. Acceptable Loss is his first effort and set the tone for every subsequent work. If you want to know why "America's finest" served during this unpopular war, and why they gave their best, read Acceptable Loss and then pick up the rest of Jorgenson's works. You'll come away feeling patriotic and proud to be an American. Thanks, Kregg.

A great look at the effects of war on the average grunt .

Kregg Jorgenson takes you through his very personal and both physically and mentally painful account of his entire time in Vietnam. Although a decorated "hero", he shows us how he found something far more improtant than his medals or cause: his "buddies". He guides the reader through the numerous harrowing experiences that re-shaped his whole way of thinking and does not try to gloss over his own shortcomings. The one over-riding thing I can say about this book is that it is honest. There are no stats, no overall perspective, just the plain truth about what he witnessed and felt during his tour. That is the most shocking, honourable, moving and often funny thing he can write. An immensely enjoyable book, so much so I read it virtually everywhere I got a chance to sit down; gripping to the last.
