Improve Your Memory, Read Faster, & Much More
By Bradley Bevers
This is a unique book that is hard to describe, but let me start by saying that it is really good. I have read few books in my life that I would recommend to anyone I come across, but this is definitely one of them. It is always hard to tell what the value will be in a personal development book - most are filled with fluff, repeated information, and junk science. This book is packed with useable, actionable ideas and it could easily change the direction of your life.

The Breakdown:

* Memory Training. The first three chapters focus on memory. Big, big help for the rest of the book, in ways that I did not expect. Don't skip this section - follow through with the steps and you will be able to apply what you learn later in new ways.

* Speed Reading. Great information. Simple steps to read faster, with a self-test. I am a lifelong reader, but I was still able to pick up a couple of tips that will definitely help me.

* Creating Goals. This section focuses on setting goals for yourself. The keystone goal and being able to visualize goals with the memory training are unique to this book, and make a difference.

* Time management, including setting weekly and daily goals. I already use the daily Big 6 list that the author describes and it definitely works.

* Values, Purpose, & Vision. In this section the author walks you through creating your purpose statement, setting your vision for different areas in your life, and identifying your personal core values. I have read entire books dedicated to these things, but the author is able to accomplish more in two chapters. Well worth buying the book for these two chapters alone.

* Implementation. How to implement what you have learned, including suggestions on starting your day.

I realize that a book that claims to improve memory, raise reading comprehension, and help you set your life's goals and accomplish more in business sounds a little ridiculous. The bottom line is that this book pulls it off and you will definitely enjoy reading it along the way. I am already recommending it to my friends and looking forward to referring back to it in the future. There are also videos and extra resources available online for everyone who buys the book. Highly Recommended.

How to increase personal growth and professional development with accelerated learning to achieve "record-breaking" results
By Robert Morris
Roger Seip is not the first nor will he be the last to observe, "People don't tap into their full potential." Why not? He suggests two "dire" mistakes: "First, they look outside themselves for the answers. They believe that there's a magic bullet that someone has forged, and if they could only get their hands on that elusive magic bullet, everything would change for them...After people resign themselves to the fact that there is no magic bullet, they commit the second mistake. They make the process of growth way more complex than it really is. In an attempt to take personal responsibility and fully engage, all but a very wise few overcomplicate the simple steps that create huge personal growth." What to do and how to do it? This book is Seip's response.

He recommends a process by which to achieve incremental but compounding improvement of skills that will, over time, increase memory retention capacity, strengthen reading and reasoning skills (i.e. comprehension, making decisions, solving problems), increase active and productive engagement, improve allocation of resources (especially time and attention), clarify core values and a compelling vision, nourish a sense of purpose, and meanwhile sustain what Seip characterizes as "aggressive mental care." He urges his reader to embark on a journey of self-improvement that never ends.

My earlier reference to "compounding improvement" will not be found in Seip's book but I am certain he agrees with me that any process "feeds on itself," for better or worse. In economics, for example, compound interest builds value in a savings mechanism of some kind but increases debt as an unpaid balance on a credit card. Or consider habits. It is far easier for bad ones to become worse than for good ones to continue. It is imperative, therefore, that those embarked on the "journey" Seip recommends combine tenacity with patience. Do not misunderstand Seip's use of the word "simple." He means it in the same sense that Oliver Wendell Holmes once did when observing that he "wouldn't give a fig for simplicity on this side of complexity" but would give his life for "simplicity on the other side of complexity."

These are among the dozens of passages I found to be of greatest interest and value, also listed to suggest the range of subjects covered during the course of the book's narrative:

o The Teachability Index (Pages 8-12)
o The Mental File Folder System 22-25)
o Taking Optimal Care of Your Brain (36-39)
o "The Very Best of All Time" (52)
o Three Reading Habits You Can Reduce (56-58)
o The Balance [i.e. Reading Speed and Comprehension] Pages 71-73
o Sense of Urgency (86-92)
o Three Emotional Barriers, and, Mental Barriers (106-115)
o The Myth of Balance (120-121)

Seip Comment: "Balance doesn't exist in our society, and even if it did you wouldn't want it." (Page 120)

o Chapter 11: The Two-Hour Solution: How to Create a Record-Breaking Schedule (129-141)
o For God's Sake, Stop Multitasking! and, Work in Bursts, and Work During Primetimes (148-150)
o [How to] Become a Spectacular Listener (154-155)
o How to Rank Core Values (166-168)
o A Structured Way of Answering the Other Big Question, "What Do I want to do?"(174-179)
o [How to] Practice Aggressive Mental Care (189-192)

Be sure to read and then re-read very carefully his discussion of five "Energy Management Tools" in Chapter 16. Extending the journey metaphor a tad, even if you were a new vehicle (let's say a Land Rover ATV), you could not go anywhere without "fuel." The same is true of the process of compounding improvement.

No brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the scope of material that Roger Seip provides in this volume but I hope that I have at least suggested why I think so highly of Train Your Brain for Success. Also, I hope that those who read this commentary will be better prepared to determine whether or not they wish to read the book and, in that event, will have at least some idea of how to find and develop top global talent that could perhaps be of substantial benefit to their professional development as well as to the success of their own organization.

Totally lacks focus
By InfoJunkie
This book is all over the place. It starts with memory training and reading skills. Then to time management and setting goals and core values.

Unfortunately, because it tries to cover so much ground it doesn't cover anything well.

There are many other books better written on the topic.

And there's some strange logic in the book. On page 120 he says that we shouldn't strive to achieve balance. Why? Because true balance would be 28 hours of sleep a week, 28 hours of family time, 28 hours of work. It's truly an idiotic analogy.

Anyone that's a true success knows balance is important, even if your goals sometime require a temporary period of imbalance.

There's not much original thought in the book either. The section on time management is taken straight from Steven Covey's excellent book on the subject. And he makes a mistake by attributing it to covey's book "The 7 habits of highly effective people." Covey's book on time management was actually titled, "First things first."

In short, this is a book that lacked a definiteness of purpose before writing. And it really shows. I'm glad I got it at the library.

This is a very helpful resource for associates who are beginning to think about client development activities, as well as those who have been doing some of this work but are looking for more targeted guidance. It does need a little updating to reflect the latest in online marketing, etc., but the fundamental principles are solid.

My review of Petter Amundsen's (formerly The Organist) The SEVEN STEPS TO MERCY with Shakespeare's Key to the Oak Island Templum
By Peggy_TX
My correspondence with Petter began in early January 2015. In mid-March, Petter invited me, and I subsequently volunteered, to be a proofreader for him on his project of translating his book "The Organist" into English. Like almost all of you, I had watched Season 2 of Curse of Oak Island as it came to a cliff-hanging end, and I was completely hooked on this mystery!! But I hadn't really started my own research until I began chatting with Petter.
My personal book interests and range of subjects are pretty eclectic. I gravitate to non-fiction and biographies, but I love great mysteries, conspiracy theories, history, and I'm into genealogy and Bible research. There's also usually a circle-a-word puzzle book lying around my house, with a handy pencil.
I began initially, as I hope many of you will, by reading Petter's ebook "Oak Island & The Treasure Map in Shakespeare". This book was the catalyst of my intrigue and curiosity because it revealed more than what the show had aired about Petter's research, and made me want to read "The Organist" even more. Early on, I realized that Petter's theory had logic, reason, and probability to it. I soon learned that the complexity of Petter's theory would require an investment of my time, but I was more than ready, willing, and very excited to dive into it, because I wanted to know.

I must admit, I've never really been a Shakespeare enthusiast, but English and History were always my favorite subjects in school, along with music. Petter, being an organist in a church, also brought common ground to our conversations, but also made me realize his ability to read things other people might over look.

Petter's original book, The Organist, covered every inch of his theory. From inception, to a trail of clues taking one through all sorts of subjects, to include: literature, philosophy, religion, history, language, geometry, symbolism, astronomy, secret societies, geography, and of course, lost buried treasures. But it was written in 2006, and was never translated into English.
A multitude of things seemed to have happened with the story, and Petter, since the delivery of that book, so being on the cutting edge of this new and fully updated version--naturally my answer was an immediate YES!! when Petter asked me to assist him with his task of finally translating the book into English.

Petter's story is told through the eyes of his interviewer and co-author, Erlend Loe, a fellow Norwegian. Petter takes Loe through a meticulous and pathological journey of a 400 year old treasure saga, that magnetically draws the reader in, right from the beginning. Loe soon learns that Petter has not only done his research thoroughly within Shakespeare's First Folio, but has also discovered a multitude of repeated "mistakes" and elaborate ciphers that are so notable that Loe's skepticism soon turns into tangible proof. Proof that not only did Shakespeare's works contain these clues and ciphers, but that they were indisputably crafted by Francis Bacon, and his closest allies. Petter also takes us to the very gravestone of Shakespeare to prove not only did this secret group construct and hide the treasure map within the plays, but paralleled their scheme to build a New Solomon's Temple in the New World in order to hide the manuscripts, and a treasure of epic ancient proportion.

Petter leads Loe through a grand cryptic maze of cipher clues that explain the Rosicrucian philosophy of Bacon and his apprentices and why they went to such amazing lengths to do this. Then further, through constellation clues in a grand celestial map, Petter takes a trip to Oak Island Nova Scotia. Here he proves his genius theory, of a Cabbalistic Tree of Life, by digging up the stones that prove to be exactly where he calculated them to be.

But the New book, brings even more! Petter gives the reader an inside and personal view about the making of his film, "Shakespeare the Hidden Truth", and his involvement on the show, "The Curse of Oak Island" in wonderfully intimate detail. He also ties in other research he has done, such as the Shugburough Hall inscription cipher enigma, which he solves brilliantly! Even distinctive clues within the King James Version of the Bible itself that truly make case-closed, the connection and authorship of Shakespeare by Bacon & company are revealed.

Every single Chapter, and 3 additional Epilogues will make you feel like the Indiana Jones of Oak Island, and answer every single question of Who? What? When? Why? and How? about the treasure yet to be unearthed on the island, and the motivation of those behind it.

Petter's revised book gives total merit to his theory, and completely sorts out the chronological order of his discoveries, sources all of his research, and lays it all out where there can be no doubt remaining of its literally rock-solid validity. His knowledge of European History and Masonic symbolism, combined with multiple language skills, and his desire to collect original books and understand their true meanings, make him uniquely qualified to bring this story full circle.
This book is a must read for every Oak Island enthusiast, no matter what level of interest.

Petter anxiously awaits the publishing of his book, as do I. When it does arrive on bookshelves across America and Canada, I will be exceptionally proud and honored that he included me in this thrilling process. It's been a journey I will never forget, and when the treasure of Oak Island is finally revealed, I think we will soon see that History will definitely have to be re-written.

A Fascinating Journey into English Renaissance Cryptography & Its Shakespearean Map to the Arcadian Treasure on Oak Island
By Brad Clark
Erlend Loe is a Norwegian novelist, screenwriter and film critic who, through a series of fourteen interview-type meetings (made into chapters) with fellow Norwegian and researcher Petter Amundsen, is introduced to cryptographic discoveries made by Petter that answer the Shakespeare authorship question in a way that has never been done before. Those discoveries are also linked through a hidden celestial map to the famous treasure-hunt site of Oak Island in Nova Scotia (which was, at one time, known as “Arcadia”).

As a reader one shares in Erlend’s progressive initiation into the discoveries and cryptographic methods by which they were found, beginning with Petter’s own journey into the subject through the mysterious 1920s novel The Tunnel Thru the Air by the legendary trader William D. Gann. It was discovered that Gann himself was a “Baconian” (one who believed Francis Bacon was the mastermind behind the Shakespeare corpus) and a friend of Baconian Manly P. Hall. This emphasis on Bacon led Petter into his own original research and discoveries as presented in this book, including the discovery of elaborate 17th century Rosicrucian involvement and a Cabalistic Tree of Life made out of stones on Oak Island that incorporates and extends beyond what is known as “Nolan’s Cross”.

Unlike the title of Petter’s earlier and shorter ebook “Oak Island & The Treasure Map in Shakespeare”, the title of this one is cryptic and the interpretation is revealed through the meetings between Erlend and Petter, although I will say that it involves Freemasonry’s Square and Compasses as well as the Tree of Life and its “Mercy” Sephirot. This is not a book to simply read through and set aside. It requires repeated study because one will soon realize that the beautiful cryptography involved here was created by Renaissance genius of the highest order. Not only is this shown throughout the meetings, but it is also shown in the book's two Epilogues through Petter’s expert analysis of the famous motto “Et in Arcadia ego” in paintings from the 1600s and how this phrase is also found in Shakespeare. The discoveries are startling, and Petter’s own genius in discovering them honors those who masterfully hid them.

I did not care about Shakespeare before I discovered Petter’s work, beginning with his Sweet Swan of Avon series of four hour-long episodes free on Vimeo. His research, including this book, has changed my life for the better and gave me an appreciation and respect for the works of Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, and his devoted literary associates that I did not have before. One realizes that this is not just about ciphers or hidden treasure but about the greatest values that the human mind can conceive. I highly recommend this!

Tedious reading.
By Glo in Philly
While the theory presented in this book may have some basis in fact and may appear at least somewhat credible, I found it to be incredibly tedious reading and actually fell asleep three times trying to get through the first few chapters. Nevertheless, I carried on simply because I like to get to the end of a book before forming an opinion. It is true that the centuries leading up to Shakespeare's time were fraught with peril as that era saw a number of powerful and corrupt bishops and popes bent on destroying all who failed to kiss their robes. In fact, the Catholic church - such as it was then - had as much blood on its hands as Al Quaida and ISIS today. One needs only to pick up a volume or two on the history of religion to confirm this. Those corrupt heads of the church were credited with wiping out bands of innocent island natives who failed to convert as well as turning on their former champions, the Knights Templar, and eventually executing the remaining members, but that's another story.

Fast forward several centuries to where the Catholics are still burning and beheading but corrupt monarchs are added to the mix. It's easy to see why the by then paranoid masses felt a need to employ codes and ciphers to communicate sensitive information and keep their precious secrets from falling into the wrong hands. Because I am familiar with that history, it is easy for me to believe there may be a hidden message encoded in the writings of Shakespeare - Petter Amundsen does make some convincing arguments. What I find difficult to grasp within the pages of this book are the numerous illustrations where the author has circled select words or letters within words in the various Shakespeare sonnets, drawn triangles over some pages and circles with lines through them over others to come up with the hidden message. How did he begin? How did he know exactly where to place that triangle or circle on the page? Did he simply open the book, scan a page and say, "Oh look, there's a space between two letters that shouldn't be there. What could it mean?" Apparently so. And if that's the case, what is the reader to make of the fact that within the pages of his own book there are also inconsistencies in the print? Are these, too, coded messages from the author? (See the duplicated paragraphs on pages 132 and 133, the unnecessary space between a dollar sign and the number 300 on page 159 as well as an unfinished sentence at the bottom of page 206 as examples - more are obvious as you read through the book.) Or is it simply poor editing and typesetting?

As I read through the first half-dozen chapters of this material my mind kept going back to the 2001 movie, A Beautiful Mind, about the brilliant mathematician John Nash who suffered from schizophrenia. In one scene, Nash has filled the walls of his garage with pages from the local newspaper. On each page words and phrases were circled, lines drawn to link words and phrases together to form a jumbled message that was incoherent to all but Nash himself. Perhaps it is the interview style in which the material is presented that makes it difficult to find some of it credible. Perhaps this book is just another brain-teaser conceived by the author himself specifically for puzzle aficionados. Either way, it's a tough slog through Amundsen's dissection of ancient texts and maps. Tackle it if you dare. Added note: Since writing this review I have read the book 'The Oak Island Mystery Solved' by Joy A. Steele. Ms. Steele's theory for the presence of the pits on Oak Island is very convincing and backed by historical research. Her book was originally published in the 1960's and reprinted in 2014. It makes me wonder if the current treasure hunters on the island have read it. If they had, I believe it would have saved them quite a bit of time and money.

Sometimes a larger-than-life author deserves a larger-than-life narrator. Willie Nelson uses his distinctive Texas drawl and unhurried pace to deliver these tales of Louis L'Amour's Old West with conviction and warmth. Some equally famous friends--Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson--perform cameos in a well-produced multicast adaptation of RIDING FOR THE BRAND, complete with jingling spurs, war whoops, and gunshots. This collection serves as a fine introduction to L'Amour's work and includes some of his best-known pieces, such as DUTCHMAN'S FLAT and MISTAKES CAN KILL YOU. With Willie talking, one can understand why "country" and "western" are often mentioned in the same breath. B.P. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Country Western Fans Will Love This!
By Jodie
I listen to quite a few audio books while traveling, but needed something to share with my Dad on a recent road trip. Since he is an avid viewer of cowboy movies, I hoped we could both enjoy this collection.

I'll have to say that we did enjoy it. For me, having a number of performers and sound effects was a bit disconcerting at first. I'm used to listening to a book with a single performer. But once I got used to the format, I'll have to say that it added to the experience. And of course, how can you not like listening to the timbre of voices like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash!

So if you're a cowboy fan, and you must be if you're looking at Louis L'Amour books, I think you'll enjoy this collection.

Immense fun listening to all of the stars voices on these discs. Read a lot of Louis L'Amour books as a kid and was enthralled listening to them as we drove on trip back east earlier this year. Would highly recommend to any fan of Louis L'Amour.

Decent short story
By LSmith
Enjoyable quick read about a girl who loses her virginity to the father of her best friend after that friend goes away for college. Melody has been secretly admiring Preston for a long time. Now that his wife has left for another man and his daughter has gone away, Melody gets that chance.

The innocence Melody portrays is cute at the beginning, but it disappears faster than her hyman during the encounter when she loses her virginity. Going from scared girl to screaming a certain two word phrase over and over within a matter of seconds seemed a little too far fetched. The other part that seemed wrong was the wife Chelsea coming back and Melody hears her having sex presumably with Preston. But just one sentence from Preston denying and then Melody saying oh okay? Again, seems too quick.

Despite these, I enjoyed reading this short story. It is good for a quick steamy ready. Three and a half stars.

Great, quick erotic read
By Christina Burgess
For a short novella (35 pages), it was well written. A little quick at the beginning because the exposition was too quick. Though, at the same time it arrived at the erotic part all that much faster.

The characters of Melody and Preston were fleshed out (no pun intended) as well as an erotic short story should be. We honestly do not care about them as much as the lust.

Again, a great, fast read that is fascinating and fun.

Very steamy

But also very short for my taste. The storyline is great, but the heroine gets a little creepy in the end. All in all, though, a very good read.

Undisputed: How to Become the World Champion in 1,372 Easy Steps, by Chris Jericho

The eagerly awaited follow-up to the New York Times bestselling A Lion's Tale documents Chris Jericho's meteoric rise to wrestling glory in the WWE.

A Lion's Tale gave readers a portrait of Jericho as a young man. Fighting his way through Mexico, rinky-dink leagues and a battery of thieving, sleazy promoters/managers, the book ended with the author's WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) debut. Never one to leave his fans hanging, as demonstrated by his recent return to wrestling glory, Jericho now tells the story of life in the big leagues. But "making it" in the premier wrestling league in the world comes with its own set of obstacles and hard lessons. Jericho, in his witty, hilarious, and surprisingly endearing manner, lays it all out: the good, the bad, and the spandex.

From Publishers Weekly
An entertaining follow-up to their popular book A Lion's Tale, international wresting superstar Jericho and co-writer Fornatale continue their chronicle of Jericho's wild ride through the wacky world of professional wrestling. This book picks up where the earlier book ended—with Jericho in 1999 joining Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Enterprise, the most important venue in wresting—and ends with Jericho's return to the ring in 2007 after a two-year retirement. Jericho hilariously details these key years as WWE's resident bad guy. His feuds with WWE's colorful (and colorfully profane) cast, including the likes of X-Pac, Ken Shamrock, Chyna, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, and Christian, are solidly recounted, although most of this will be old news to hardcore WWE fans. But the most interesting stories involve his battles on- and off-stage with such better-known stars as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Goldberg—whom Jericho once had run over by a limousine during an episode of WWE's Raw series. It is here that Jericho shines and proves once again that, next to Mick Foley, he is an insightful and funny observer of pro wrestling's absurd universe. (Feb.)

'Simply put, you MUST own this book... If his acclaimed bestseller "A Lions Tale" set a standard for wrestling tomes, his long-awaited follow-up "Undisputed" has raised the bar again Jericho is now the proud scribe of two out of the top three wrestling books of all time.' DAILY STAR 'If Jericho had never made it as a wrestler or a rock star he could have easily found a suitable career as a writer. His style of writing anc consistent wityy sense of humour makes the book very addictive... Just like the first book, this sequel belongs on the bookshelf of any wrestling fan past or present.' Chris Jericho: Still The Best in the World At What He Does
By KDawgg34
After reading Jericho's first book, I was so thrilled to read "Undisputed" to see what insight and wit we would get from Y2J. I got the book just a few days ago and I couldn't be more pleased with the material in the book. It was such an easy read. I found myself blowing through the chapters. His insight into his WWE debut, bumpy road in 1999, relationship with Vince McMahon, and many colorful insights to other wrestlers, makes this book one of the greatest wrestling books I have ever read. Right up there with "Hitman" by Bret Hart and "Have a Nice Day" by Mick Foley. Chris Jericho has had a legendary career and it's only fitting that he has two legendary books (and a great DVD now) to go along with it. I recommend this book to anyone who loves wrestling, the WWE, Chris Jericho, reading, or all of the above. I sense he might think about a third book. When and if he does, I will be ready to read what the "Savior of the WWE" has to say again.

Chris Jericho: The Best In The World Today
By SaviorRU1987
After Reading Chris's other book: A Lions Tale: Around The World In Spandex. I was so excited to find out he was getting a second book and I pre-ordered it through Amazon and received it two days ago and just finished the book. Chris gives a strong insight on the Wrestling Business from his time with the WWE up till his re-debut in 2007. He gives strong insight on the Chris Benoit tragedy, his relationship with Vince McMahon, and the progession of Fozzy from a cover band to an original band. In addition, Chris talks about his family and the marriage of his wife and has some great amazing stories. Overall it is an amazing read and is a great read for anyone.

Jericho is very funny, and his first book was priceless. This however tries to hard with the humor and puts more emphasis on his music career, which I never found interesting.

A great textbook
By A Customer
I have used Powell's book as a text for my undergraduate "Life and Teachings of Jesus" course during this past year. It is extremely well written and organized. Powell has a gift for presenting complex information in accessible form. The charts and tables in the book are particularly helpful and to the point. My students consistently compliment the book for its content and clarity. The only disappointment is that the chapters on each of the four canonical gospels are not structured in a way that mirrors their narrative shape. The struggle to lead students through the worlds created by the gospels and to present relevant critical issues at the same time is most difficult. Powell balances these concerns as well as anyone and much better than most. If only there was space in such a textbook to lead students to a discovery of the themes of the gospels instead of listing and describing them. That is a task still left to the instructor, but Powell's book provides excellent support.

Great Introduction
By A Customer
This is a very good book for summarizing dozens of scholarly fields into a coherent 'Introduction' of the canonized gospels. Great starting poing if you don't know much about Q or the M and L material. Sufficient discussion about the characteristics and histories of the four gospels. My only knock against this book is that the author too often makes the statement 'most scholars' in order to back a particular hypothesis - refuting a quote from the book that evidence should be 'weighed, not counted.' Still, I learned a lot from the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the New Testament texts.

A great introduction to the gospels
By Kellyannl
Most biblical studies are quite frankly designed for scholars and seminary students. As a general reader, I can unhesitatingly recommend this small volume that helps you understand the basics of the Gospels.
There are three sections for each of the four Gospels, discussing Characteristics (what makes it different from the other three Gospels), Historical background (where, when and why they were probably written and whether Matthew, Mark, Luke and John actually wrote them) and Major Themes (the messages that each writer wanted to get across). Things that the general reader might not be aware of, like the phantom "Q" Gospel that probably provided Matthew and Luke with material and the controversy over whether John or Lazarus was the "Beloved Disciple", are introduced in easy to understand fashion without overwhelming non-scholars. There is also an appendix summarizing the "Gnostic Gospels" which, although I wouldn't count on finding them in new copies of the New Testament anytime soon, are gaining credibility with scholars (especially the Gospel of Thomas).
I found it interesting and informative.

An author ahead of his time
By Miko
All of Le Bon's books should be a must read for anyone interested in the current advance of socialism since 1965 to the present. The man was ahead of his time by about 140 years while meticulously recounting the faulty mindset this doctrine has played on humanity for at least the past 2000 years. It's all there in black and white.

Reading his works on the psychology of crowds, one might as well be following the media of today. Le Bon is right on the money and does it without the PC baloney one has to suspect in most all contemporary writers today. Buy.

Empire of Cotton: A Global History, by Sven Beckert

WINNER OF THE BANCROFT PRIZE

PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST

The empire of cotton was, from the beginning, a fulcrum of constant global struggle between slaves and planters, merchants and statesmen, workers and factory owners. Sven Beckert makes clear how these forces ushered in the world of modern capitalism, including the vast wealth and disturbing inequalities that are with us today.
In a remarkably brief period, European entrepreneurs and powerful politicians recast the world’s most significant manufacturing industry, combining imperial expansion and slave labor with new machines and wage workers to make and remake global capitalism. The result is a book as unsettling as it is enlightening: a book that brilliantly weaves together the story of cotton with how the present global world came to exist.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, December 2014: How important is cotton? For starters, there’s a good chance that you’re wearing it right now. That’s true no matter where you live in the world. Cotton is everywhere, has been for a long time, and was the dominant commodity during the early years of our country. It fostered “war capitalism” among European nations. It helped launch the industrial revolution in England. It drove slavery. The story of cotton is the story of modern capitalism, and in Empire of Cotton, author Sven Beckert shows how a worldwide crop that came in multiple forms and was cultivated and produced in many different ways came to be dominated by the late coming Europeans, and later Americans, often through violent means, reshaping both the world economy and the world itself—for better or worse—along the way. – Chris Schluep

Review

“Masterly. . . . Deeply researched and eminently readable, Empire of Cotton gives new insight into the relentless expansion of global capitalism. With graceful prose and a clear and compelling argument, Beckert not only charts the expansion of cotton capitalism . . . he addresses the conditions of enslaved workers in the fields and wage workers in the factories. An astonishing achievement.”—Thomas Bender,New York Times

“Important . . .a major work of scholarship that will not be soon surpassed as the definitive account of the product that was, as Beckert puts it, the Industrial Revolution’s ‘launching pad.’”—Adam Hochschild, New York Times Book Review

“Breathtakingly comprehensive, informative and provocative.”—Glenn C. Altschuler, Tulsa World

“Persuasive . . . brilliant . . . Beckert’s detailed narrative never scants the rich complexity of the cotton trade’s impact on many different societies.”—Wendy Smith, Boston Globe

“Empire of Cotton proves Sven Beckert one of the new elite of genuinely global historians. Too little present-day academic history is written for the general public. ‘Empire of Cotton’ transcends this barrier and should be devoured eagerly, not only by scholars and students but also by the intelligent reading public. The book is rich and diverse in the treatment of its subject. The writing is elegant, and the use of both primary and secondary sources is impressive and varied. Overviews on international trends alternate with illuminating, memorable anecdotes. . . . Beckert’s book made me wish for a sequel.”—Daniel Walker Howe, The Washington Post

“Momentous and brilliant . . . Empire of Cotton is among the best nonfiction books of this year.”—Karen R. Long, Newsday

“Compelling . . . Beckert demonstrates persuasively how the ravenous cotton textile trade in Europe was instrumental in the emergence of capitalism and draws a direct line from the practices that nourished this empire to similar elements in the production of goods for today’s massive international retailers. Those who long to know more about how and why slavery took hold in Europe, Africa and the Americas will find this book to be immensely enlightening. Better still, those who live out the troubled legacy of the exploitation and enslavement of workers in the service of the cotton empire will find in it added inspiration for their continuing efforts to realize a just and more equitable society.”—Ruth Simmons, President Emeritus of Brown University

“Intellectually ambitious . . . a masterpiece of the historian’s craft.”—Timothy Shenk, The Nation

“A highly detailed, provocative work.”—Booklist

“Hefty, informative, and engaging . . . Beckert’s narrative skills keep the story of capitalism fresh and interesting for all readers.”—Publishers Weekly

“[Beckert’s] close-up study of the cotton economy is a valuable model for the study of capitalism generally, an economic system in which slavery and colonialism were not outliers but instead integral to the whole . . . a valuable contribution.”—Kirkus

“Fascinating and profound. . . .Global history as it should be written.”—Eric Foner

How slavery, colonialism, and strong state involvement laid the foundations of modern prosperity
By Robert J. Crawford
This is an academic treatment of how the modern industrial economy was born: heavy in detail, clear in analysis, if somewhat dry at times. While much of the ground has been covered elsewhere, the synthesis, breadth, and grand themes that emerge are unavailable in a single volume, to my knowledge. For me, it was a seminal reading experience, a necessary perspective that brought things together in a way that will influence my view of modern society for the rest of my life.

The principal idea of the book is that the cotton industry, which represented the first step in the development of the modern industrial economy, was created by slavery and brutal and ever-more-efficient state coercion in cooperation with private capital. Global in scale, this convergence of factors would re-fashion the everyday lives of a majority of people on the planet - subordinating their working days to the rhythms of machines that replaced human muscle labor, opening the way to unprecedented prosperity for many, and enabling decisionmakers far from their homes to control the lives of people they will never meet.

Beckert sees several steps in these developments. In the beginning, there was the development of "war capitalism". In a nutshell, this was the forcible appropriation of land and labor, with the cooperation of a primitive form of the state. While cotton had been in use for millenia, it was limited to small, very local, networks at this time. As demand grew and new forms of mechanized manufacture began to appear, war capitalism vastly increased the scale of cotton cultivation, employing slaves to undertake the backbreaking work of clearing the land and then the thankless task of harvesting the cotton - their utility was cheap labor that could be forced to work by any means necessary. Meanwhile, the state aided in the acquisition of land - because it exhausted the soil quickly, cotton cultivation required continual land appropriation - and the displacement or elimination of whomever was unfortunate enough to occupy that land, in most cases Amer-Indians. For their part, capitalist traders emerged in Manchester, a mercantile capital that gained tremendous market influence and political power to bring the state into alignment with their interests.

The next phase opened with the invention of new means of production, in particular in the harnessing of chemical power in mills of ever-expanding scale and with elaborate forms of administrative innovation. At the same time, the state got involved with the protection and establishment of markets for their goods, both in supply but also for selling, i.e the distribution of goods. Industry was national and nationalistic. The natural culmination of this was the colonial enterprise. This was the second great legacy of the cotton empire: the de-industrialization and control of vast new territories. For example, the skills required for the production of the fine muslin of India were completely and forever destroyed. The native populations were subjugated to this order, fitting integrally into a hierarchy that exploited them while enriching captains of industry and politicians in colonial capitals. Meanwhile, manufacturing facilities became the source of massive employment, drawing people from the countryside to urban agglomerations that grew to then-incredible proportions.

Furthermore, the state remained intimately involved in the development of the economy in the major colonial states, not only in the development of supporting infrastructure, but in the legal subjugation of workers for the protection of the evolving industrial practices. This was the crucial step in the virtuous circle that arose of self-reinforcing economic development, resulting in a far more intricate and complex industrial economy that emerged in the product cycles of related manufactures. It can only be described as a revolution that changed our lives so fundamentally that it is on a par with the neolithic revolution.

Of particular interest is the evolution of the political economy of slavery. It was seen as a necessity for cotton production in the American South - a phenomenally profitable enterprise that created capital for further industrial investment that benefited all free Americans regardless of location - and as a crucial basic resource for all the new manufacturing powers. When the American Civil War began, it severely disrupted the world economy, based as it was on cotton, and the industrialized nations desperately sought to increase the supply of raw cotton. After that war, it was proven that low-wage sharecroppers could be counted on to produce cotton in a profitable way, supported as it was by state and private repression of the newly freed slaves. The colonial powers took note of this. In the US South, this arrangement was to survive for almost a full century, when automated cotton picking was finally perfected in the 1940s.

The most recent phase of the industry is its globalization, a shift of manufacturing to the former colonies. The real power gravitated to transnational corporations - predominantly retailers like Walmart or Gap - that were no longer subject to coherent national legal jurisdictions, hence largely disconnected from nationalistic considerations. While this caused the precipitous decline of once-prosperous cities like Liverpool, it is part of the ebb of flow of 21C capitalism. Organizational innovation extended to the development of massive logistical networks to handle getting cotton to manufacturers and then distributing their low-cost products in developed nations at a hefty profit. As this is so new, it is the least developed portion of the book. I suspect it decisively locks Third World producers and manufacturers into a lower-value added position, where design and brand generate greater profits for transnational corporations and their shareholders that no longer need to worry about employees in their home base of operation.

The implications of the book are of great interest and relevancy. First, it proves that the free classes all benefited directly and lastingly from slavery as an enabler of the first phase of industrialization. Without slaves (and subsequently share croppers or colonial serfs), both investment capital and the self-reinforcing and expanding product base of consumer capitalism would have accumulated far more slowly, perhaps over centuries rather than decades. This is the best argument for reparations that I have yet seen - the line from slavery and colonialism to prosperity for most of us is direct, while the descendants of slaves and serfs remain exploited and oppressed. Second, the state functioned as a crucial support for the development of private enterprise, from protecting nascent industries to enforcing laws that favored the manufacturing class. This flies in the face of neo-liberal ideology, which argues for a "free trade" that locks the developing world into an inferior status.

This book is a wonderful intellectual adventure, its ideas are far more subtle than I could ever express here. It is a bit too academic for my taste, covering developments in exhaustive detail, but on the whole it is a page turner. Recommended with the greatest enthusiasm.

Sven Beckert's Empire of Cotton continues on a global scale his project in his first book, The Monied Metropolis: New York City and the Consolidation of the American Bourgeoisie, 1850-1896, in demonstrating that the US is not an exceptional Arcadia emancipated from the repressive political, economic, & ideological forces of global capitalism. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of our global system of political economy, indeed for anyone seriously interested in the development of the 19th and twentieth century world. Beckert, a professor of history at Harvard University, creates a history of capitalism for the 21st century, decisively demonstrating that older Marxist scholars notably Eugene Genovese, were wrong to argue that slavery was a pre-capitalist mode of production, with the implication that Southern US slaveowners were somehow more benevolent "paternalist" employers than Northern industrialists. He also definitively challenges classical liberal lines of scholarship that argue that superior western institutions (other than the military) and free markets led to the economic expansion of the West. Unfreedom had far more to do with the rise of capitalism than freedom, liberty, or democracy. Even after the post-emancipation shift to industrial capitalism, capitalist enterprise remained tied closely to, and probably could not continue to expand without strong exercises of state, particularly military power. In line with recent scholarship by Walter Johnson, and Edward Baptiste, Beckert demonstrates that slave labor and state action on behalf of private interests were integral to the establishment of capitalism and to the industrial revolution.

Conducting research in the archives of every major country that produced cotton or finished cotton goods, and consulting local scholars where he doesn't have the languages, this book is also a model of transnational scholarship. Beckert traces the global evolution of cotton production and consumption, noting that in the early modern period, Western Europe was notable as a non-cotton producing region, making it even more remarkable that in the 19th century that it should become the center of the cotton trade.

He divides capitalism into two periods--war capitalism, which lasts until the US Civil War, was the first system. "Slavery, the expropriation of indigenous peoples, imperial expansion, armed trade, and the assertion of sovereignty over people and land by entrepreneurs were at its core." He then demonstrates the close ties of supply, transport, communication, and credit with plantation forced labor. The knowledge and wealth that war capitalism expropriated, he argues, were "crucial preconditions for Europe's extraordinary economic development."

But expropriation and slavery, along with the deindustrialzation of the original producers of finished cotton goods in Asia and South America were not stable bases for bourgeois property and production. The revolution in St. Domingue in 1793 disrupted the English cotton industry and shifted production the American South, until the US Civil War ended the southern states' near monopoly of world cotton exports. This second American revolution, fought over the issue of free labor, shifted much of the cotton business back to Asia, Egypt, and Central America. Britain and other cotton-military- industrial complexes expanded their penetrations of colonies, such as India, where peasant labor had resisted the complete replacement of subsistence crops by cotton that Manchester demanded.

The new system, industrial capitalism, based on wage labor, both created political openings for workers in the West. "The dependence of capitalists on the state, and of the state on its people, empowered the workers who produced that capital. . . By the second half of the nineteenth century, workers organized collectively, both in unions and political parties, and slowly, over multiple decades, improved their wages and working conditions." The increased production costs eventually made the reindustrialization of the global South possible, and the center of the cotton industry has shifted there.

Empire of Cotton is surely one of the most significant works of history published this year. It is not impossible that in ten years that historians will consider it one of the most significant works of the decade.

"Vast sphere of war capitalism"
By evolveape
"...starting in the sixteenth century, armed European capitalists and capital-rich European states reorganized the world's cotton industry. It was this early embrace of war capitalism that was the precondition for the Industrial Revolution that eventually created an enormous further push toward global economic integration and continues to shape and reshape our world today..."
An excellent account on the importance of cotton in the development of capitalism with the emphasis given to slave labor. My only question is while discussing capitalism the author makes no reference to "Das Kapital" even Karl Marx have many attributions to cotton industry in England in his work . Let us not forget F. Engels who provided the information and data to Marx due to his connection to the textile industry in England, his family owned factories in Manchester. In his work " The Condition of the Working Class" Engels too gives examples of workers in the cotton mills of victorian Manchester: As an early advocate of workers cooperatives, George Jacob Holyoake writes in the secularist paper "Reasoner": "As you enter Manchester from Rusholme, the town at the lower end of Oxford road has the appearance of one dense volume of smoke, more forbidden than the entrance to Dante's inferno". In writing the ills of capitalism Engels admits that he was shocked: "I have never seen so systematic a shutting out of the working class from the thoroughfares, so tender a concealment of everything which might affront the eye and the nerves of the bourgeois as in Manchester" "..in such dwellings only a physically degenerate race, robbed of all humanity, degraded, reduced morally and physically to bestiality, could feel comfortable and at home" Likewise Robert Owen, an utopian socialist, was a textile manufacturer himself tried to change the conditions of his workers by introducing a model of equitable employment and community cohesion in his factories. Furthermore on the impacts of American Civil War on cotton industry in England the author misses hundreds of thousands Lancashire laborers enthusiastically supporting Abraham Lincoln's ideals and the anti-slave North being fired, cut back to part-time and earnings reduced. As a result food riots broke out. (See "History of Cotton Famine." by R. Arthur Arnold) In addition to all this, no reference is given to John Hobson and his work on "Imperialism". Hobson's focus on industrial capitalism as the driving force of imperialism and his great influence on V.I Lenin and his work "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism" is well known. These references would have only enriched the argument in the context of "war capitalism". Now that the cold war is over and Soviet Union has been disintegrated the historians should not hold themselves from exploring the classical works out of the fear of being labeled as "marxist".

A fair review of this book appeared in slate.com by Eric Herschthal entitled: "The Fabric of Our Lives"

Despite the shortcomings mentioned above I should still consider it as an important work about the history of cotton industry especially in connection with slave trade and development of industrial capitalism.
