Liked the presentation on Youtube...teacher guide not necessary as it offers no explanation. I got the books to support numeracy with my autistic son. I had to research the terms digit sums and others to figure out what the books were trying to convery. I understand he has curriculum he is using in Nevada so perhaps this is a part of his instructional platform. I will complete the book regardless as I am invested in not one but two.

My child is experiencing some difficulty in math class. I purchased in hopes that it will assist me in assisting him & make math a little easier. I was quite disappointed when ordering that I had to purchase the answer guide separate to the book. It should come as a set or in one whole book, but it should not be sold separately in my opinion. I bought anyway since I really wanted to help with my child's math struggles. We cannot wait to begin using immediately!!

I was looking for a book on Chinese brush paintings that not only showed you how to to the painting technique, but also had a lot of different design motifs. well this is the book. It is a step-by-step book and has over 200 motifs that are beautifully illustrated. It shows you the finished painted motif and the steps to achieve it and each page has a sidebar of the paint colors you will need that not only tell you the color in words, such as pink, but has a small circle of the paint color too (great for a beginner) as well as the brushes that you will need for that particular motif.

The best feature of the book is that it is spiral bound, so that it opens flat and stays flat while you are referring to it. It is a small book height (about the height of a hardback novel), but loaded with great illustrations and beautifully laid out.

Not for learning traditional Chinese painting

There are definite do's and don'ts when learning Chinese painting method. This book does not cover traditional method in my opinion. Obviously, the experienced painter strays from traditional method to find their own style, but is founded in the method. If you are looking to learn Chinese painting techniques, i would not recommend this book, simply because it does not explain do's and don'ts. For example, showing common mistakes or unacceptable examples of a brush stroke.

However, it does contain a very comprehensive collection of flowers, plants, bugs, people, fish, etc., and the exact brush strokes used to create that image, which i'd have to say is hard to find in a book. So if you're looking for some simple exercises with a brush for creating almost anything you can think of, this is your book.

A brilliant series...

Rising Son is the second book in the Juliana Lucio series. I must say that I have been anxiously awaiting the second installment by DeCarlo and she did not disappoint.
It picks up right after the amazing ending of Stolen Sun. Juliana has had to reveal herself as a vampire to her eldest son, Christian. She is faced with the monumental task of shielding him from others who would kill him for having knowledge of their existence. As hard as she tries, she is unable to stop Christian from becoming even more engrossed in her dark and deadly world.

Seeking a solution with the continued help of Ana and William, she navigates the dangers of the vampire underground where two powerful factions of vampires at war will call into question exactly where her loyalties lie.

To say that I am a fan of Decarlo's work is an understatement. Rising Son is yet another example of why. It combines action, intrigue and steamy romance together with an intelligent prose sure to entertain every fan of the vampire genre. The heroine, Juliana, is well thought out. She is multi-dimensional and strong. And of course, William is her perfect counterpart as protector and lover. The relationship between them has evolved and solidified as I hoped that it would. DeCarlo pulled no punches with the climactic ending and I cannot wait for the next one. It will immediately go to the top of my to read list.

Rising Son Review

I read this as an e-book on my Kindle touch. It is a well paced story. The author creates a believable group of characters with flaws and likable qualities. A great 'sidekick' for the main character about to come into his own is here if you like rooting for the under -under dog. Of course, He is the perfect age for a sequel romance, a genius, quirky and has a bit of attitude. Sounds about right for the journey to a more prominent place in the story.

I enjoy books with strong female leads. I wish,as a reader, I did not have to go through the paces of self-doubt within her dialogue, along the lines of "I'm really amazing and I don't trust anybody." and "I'll save everyone!Now where are my pesky super genius created bullets?".

I would read it again, and I hope the story continues. I think the writing gets stronger as it develops.

The cover is a little embarrassing and pretty typical of what one sees on a Vampire/ anything preternatural romance book these days but that is not within the control of the writer-(Art department! You hear me? Thanks for the bodice ripper switch- up, but for heavens sake, this a book with a female lead. Why can't we see her face? Are you conscious that this is putting a woman in the background?

Rising Son is a great continuation of The Juliana Lucio Series! There are so many twists and turns this book is as fun as a roller coaster. There are so many surprises the characters will keep you second guessing. LC DeCarlo has an amazing imagination and her books keep getting better and better. I can't wait to read what happens next!

A must have for a "Wild Things" fan

"Seven Little Monsters" by Maurice Sendak is a delightful little counting book for any true fan of "Where the Wild Things Are". "Seven Little Monsters" is an unknown follow-up to Sendak's Caldecott winning, "Where the Wild Things Are". The book takes the Wild Things characters, except Max, and shows their mischievous side. Sendak uses simple rhyming text and familiar illustrations. "Seven Little Monsters" is a great book to use in the preschool classroom, especially around Halloween. "Seven Little Monsters" is a great addition to anyone's library!

This was my daughter's favorite book when she was about three. It seemed so strange that this would be so, given the faint colors compared to Sendak's other fanciful books, my favorites. It was worn to pieces by the time she was five, so I was so happy to find this copy still available. Thanks!!!

It is this kind of fantastic, myth-making perspective that runs through each entry of this anthology, whose contributors include such master essayists as John McPhee, Susan Sontag, Joan Didion and Annie Dillard. Hopping from one genre to another-biography, poetry, philosophy, travel writing, memoir-D'Agata makes the point that the essay is not just one form of writing but can be every form of writing. Although it may occasionally seem that D'Agata has chosen a selection to illustrate how erudite he is-such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's "Erato Love Poetry," a set of bewildering fragments and (literally) blank white space-many other choices convey the wondrously infinite possibilities of the essay form. I'm waiting for the next one...

I got this for my kid so she can read the next American essay but I suppose there will be a sequel since there will always be another American essay. Maybe they should look into a subscription model for American essays with the next one automatically coming in the mail.

Some good writing, some good theory

You don't have to like John D'Agata or some of his showier cultural stunts to like this work. He does a good job of backgrounding and contextualizing experimental nonfiction, and some of the selections in here are to die for (a personal essay told deftly and funnily in only footnotes? Tell me you didn't wish you'd thought of that first). Anyone in a creative writing nonfic track or studying contemporary lit should find this a worthwhile read.
