Review
"In Storytelling with Data, Cole has created an of-the-moment complement to the work of data visualization pioneers like Edward Tufte. She's worked at and with some of the most data-driven organizations on the planet as well as some of the most mission-driven, data-free institutions. In both cases, she's helped sharpen their messages, and their thinking."
—Laszlo Bock, SVP of People Operations, Google, Inc. and author ofWork Rules!

From the Back Cover

praise for storytelling with data

"Storytelling with Data is a superbly written, masterful display of rare art in the business world. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic possesses a unique ability—a gift—in telling a story through data. At JPMorgan Chase, she has helped improve our capabilities to explain complicated analysis to executive management and the regulators with whom we work. Cole's book brings her talents together in an easy-to-read guide with excellent examples that anyone can learn from to encourage smarter decision-making."
—Mark R. Hillis, Chief Risk Officer of Mortgage Banking at JPM Chase

"We have so much data that it can be hard to get people to pay attention to our critical findings. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic taught us valuable lessons in her workshop and it is fantastic to see these expanded upon in Storytelling with Data. My team is already using the lessons Cole teaches to move people to action as they see new pearls of understanding and make a difference in the lives of others. Now others can, too!"
—Eleanor Bell, Director of Business Analytics at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

"There is something lovely about being consistent with your own teachings. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic accomplishes that with her first book. She is an advocate for clarity and concision in visualization, and her book is as clear, concise, and practical as it gets. If you are a beginner in visualization, or if you struggle to produce good charts in your everyday job with tools like Excel, Tableau, Qlik, and the like, this is a great place to start learning the core principles."
—Alberto Cairo, Knight Chair in Visual Journalism and Professor of Visualization at the University of Miami, and author of The Functional Art

"Data slides are not really about the data, they are about the meaning of the data. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic understands this and has written a straightforward, accessible guide that will help anyone who communicates with data connect more effectively with their audience."
—Nancy Duarte, CEO at Duarte, Inc. and bestselling author

a worthwhile book that does well what it tries to do
By Nick Cox
People wanting a basic introduction to presentation graphics would be
well served by this book by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic. Prerequisites are
minimal: there is almost no mathematical content and no use of any but
the most elementary statistical methods. Knaflic's encouraging message
is that MS Excel and PowerPoint can be quite enough software for good
graphics, but you will need to go beyond the defaults and work at the
details.

Almost all the examples are of very small datasets already to hand with
two-way structure. 2 variables for 12 months and 5 products for 7 years
are typical sizes. In practice when analysing data it can be hard work
deciding what methods to use and reducing a mass of raw data to a
concise summary. These steps, sometimes most of a project, are here
assumed already done.

The subtitle flags a focus on "business professionals"; the content
tactfully implies junior people presenting with PowerPoint to
time-challenged bosses at brief meetings. Seemingly few write reports to
be read any more, or use any other presentation software.

Knaflic is excellent on the need to keep things simple. She has a good
eye and sound logic on what looks and works well and what does not.
Examples show how mediocre graphs can be improved by reducing clutter,
killing the key, better use of color, and similar standard tricks.
Horizontal bar charts are usually more readable than vertical, and pie
charts and a false third dimension are best avoided: these points have
been well made many times, yet do deserve forceful repetition. Various
kinds of bar and line charts are her main work-horses.

Sometimes the discussion seems a little contrived, as poor graphs are
set up to be shot down, but that's often what convinces. Readers should
be on the author's side as she encourages us towards effective and
tasteful graphics. Her combinations of blue for data deserving emphasis
and grey for data providing context -- or of blue and orange for groups
to contrast -- are good design patterns for experienced analysts as well
as outright beginners.

The closing chapters are more long-winded and repetitive, but do include
small gems. A splendid case study on avoiding spaghetti graphics (lots
of tangled lines) stands out, and the problem and the ideas deserved
more.

I always find it disappointing when datasets are fabricated or
sufficiently anonymous that they might as well be. People care most
about their own data which an author cannot provide, and confidentiality
constraints often bite, but real data examples are still generally
preferable to fake. Too many examples here are variants on Products A to
E or Features A to O. Unfortunately an outrageous example of a bar
chart from a well-known U.S. television news network (p.50) seems all
too real.

What's not here includes Cleveland dot charts, histograms and box plots
even among the staples of good introductory statistics courses, let
alone (say) use of logarithmic scale, always one of the first graphical
devices for many sciences. So if you want something with more
statistical bite or depth, you need to look elsewhere. Naomi Robbins'
excellent, no nonsense Creating more effective graphs
http://www.amazon.com/Creating-Effective-Graphs-Naomi-Robbins/dp/0985911123
would enable you to go further.

As in any first edition there are some small slips and exaggerated
claims. 40% is not a majority (p.5). There is confusion between number
and percentage on p.39. Any rule that "bar charts must have a zero
baseline" (p.52) is simplistic. It is quite correct that bar charts
should encode departures from some sensible reference level. (The
television network responsible should have paid attention.) But that
reference level could easily be some value not zero, such as parity
between men and women, or the mean of a variable, or 32 degrees
Fahrenheit to separate freezing and non-freezing temperatures. I
disagree that every dollar amount or percent should be labeled as such
(p.90); that is repetitive clutter such as Knaflic rightly deplores. Nor
is it an absolute principle that every axis needs a title. If the axis
labels are 2008 to 2015, no one should need "Year" to explain what is
happening. Far from being "extremely rare" (p.141), several exceptions
to that principle are included in this book!

A note on style: Inside a very useful book is an even more useful
shorter book struggling to get out. For my taste, the motivational
warm-ups and little anecdotes are often too spun-out or too trite. Good
graphics should be presented as illustrations within a good story: a key
point, but not one that required a long chapter with digressions on Red
Riding Hood or on Aristotle on drama, or advice from a junior high
school teacher. A tighter copy-editor would have signalled that
"leverage" (used as a verb about 70 times) was too much of a personal
favorite, while "de-emphasize" for "tone down", "utilize" for "use" and
"incredible" for things all too credible are among several other
repeated tics.

An easy solution is to skip and skim: if a book is on graphics, you can
always just look at the graphics. In this case, Knaflic has written a
worthwhile book that, small details aside, does well what it tries to
do.

This book shows what "good" data visuals look like, and explains why.
By Ben Jones
I highly recommend this book to anyone who uses charts and graphs to convey a data-driven message to an audience.

Cole shows what clear and well-designed visualizations look like, and explains why they’re effective. She also gives sound advice on practices to avoid in most cases, such as pie charts, 3D views and dual axes. She stops a good exit short of Dogmaville, though, explaining that you should be able to give a good explanation why you’re using a challenging chart type if you decide to go that route.

Well beyond merely choosing chart types, the value of this book is that you will learn how to eliminate clutter, focus attention on what matters, and de-emphasize everything else. The pages are filled with high quality before and after images that bring the subject to full color and show you what “good” looks like.

She doesn’t deal with “How” from a tools perspective – her techniques and principles can be put into practice using pretty much any tool from Excel to Tableau to D3. And she doesn’t talk about “data dashboards” that are characterized by multiple charts and graphs placed side-by-side. The book deals entirely with individual visualizations and how they can be designed, annotated, and shown in sequence to tell a story and build to a coherent conclusion.

I especially enjoyed chapters 7 and 8, where Cole gleans lessons from theater, cinema and fiction and then shows how they can be applied to crafting a story with data, including determining flow and storyboarding.

Clear, concise, useful, and highly recommended!
By brett
Cole takes a difficult subject and makes it understandable. By itself that would be good and worthy of praise. Clarity is always appreciated. But she does this by employing the skills, traits, and tricks that she so clearly explains. Cole implores the reader to eliminate clutter, visually demonstrates why it is important and its potential impact, then strips away at difficult concepts with clear and concise prose again and again. We readily grasp all this because of her use of context, visual display, simplicity, focus, design, and in so doing she tells a story about dealing with data and information, so that we can inform and not confuse. Perfect. But she achieves even more because through the use of these concepts she makes them useful for everyone and not only those dealing with large data sets; she demonstrates that which she illustrates. I'm a trial lawyer. I found her chapters on thinking like a designer and lessons in storytelling to be more than helpful. From the importance of aesthetics, audience, controlling narrative flow, to repetition she provides lessons in telling stories that can benefit anyone. Recommended for everyone!

Black Box Thinking: Why Most People Never Learn from Their Mistakes--But Some Do, by Matthew Syed

Nobody wants to fail. But in highly complex organizations, success can happen only when we confront our mistakes, learn from our own version of a black box, and create a climate where it’s safe to fail.

We all have to endure failure from time to time, whether it’s underperforming at a job interview, flunking an exam, or losing a pickup basketball game. But for people working in safety-critical industries, getting it wrong can have deadly consequences. Consider the shocking fact that preventable medical error is the third-biggest killer in the United States, causing more than 400,000 deaths every year. More people die from mistakes made by doctors and hospitals than from traffic accidents. And most of those mistakes are never made public, because of malpractice settlements with nondisclosure clauses.

For a dramatically different approach to failure, look at aviation. Every passenger aircraft in the world is equipped with an almost indestructible black box. Whenever there’s any sort of mishap, major or minor, the box is opened, the data is analyzed, and experts figure out exactly what went wrong. Then the facts are published and procedures are changed, so that the same mistakes won’t happen again. By applying this method in recent decades, the industry has created an astonishingly good safety record.

Few of us put lives at risk in our daily work as surgeons and pilots do, but we all have a strong interest in avoiding predictable and preventable errors. So why don’t we all embrace the aviation approach to failure rather than the health-care approach? As Matthew Syed shows in this eye-opening book, the answer is rooted in human psychology and organizational culture.

Syed argues that the most important determinant of success in any field is an acknowledgment of failure and a willingness to engage with it. Yet most of us are stuck in a relationship with failure that impedes progress, halts innovation, and damages our careers and personal lives. We rarely acknowledge or learn from failure—even though we often claim the opposite. We think we have 20/20 hindsight, but our vision is usually fuzzy.

Syed draws on a wide range of sources—from anthropology and psychology to history and complexity theory—to explore the subtle but predictable patterns of human error and our defensive responses to error. He also shares fascinating stories of individuals and organizations that have successfully embraced a black box approach to improvement, such as David Beckham, the Mercedes F1 team, and Dropbox.

GREAT BOOK. HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING!
By Gadget Junkie
A colleague of mine sent me a link to a BBC article regarding this book several weeks ago. As an patented inventor and product designer I was very intrigued by the title. This is the first book I have read by this author. As I read through its pages, I found Matthew Syed's writing style to be captivating enough to keep my attention while describing events and facts which could otherwise be very dry. For that reason, I am compelled to read his other works, but merely based on the content, I have already recommended this book to dozens of people. The concept of learning from mistakes is as old as recorded history. However, if you think that is what this book is about, think again. There are many nuances to the subject matter disclosed which can be very thought provoking and enlightening. On several occasions I actually put the book down, feeling compelled to rethink dozens of situations in my own life where I have made mistakes, not learned from them and ended up repeating them, stuck in closed loop logic.
My key takeaway from reading this book is that Mr. Syed identifies a well-known flaw in humanity to which some critics at first blush might yawn and say “so what, nothing new here” Failure analysis has been around for centuries. Not exactly… this book covers a lot of ground. The Black Box failure analysis model has only been in use for a very limited amount of time in human history, yielding incredible results in aviation safety used for the benefit of all humanity. Yes, individuals throughout history have used versions of failure analysis to solve issues, either for themselves or for small scale issues. But this recent model transcends others in that it truly eliminates the need or benefit of lying, omitting information or tampering with evidence. By doing so, you only perpetuate a problem which could eventually end up costing you your life or the life of your loved ones. I spoke my friend who is a pilot and Lt. Col in the US Air Force about claims in this book and he confirmed the legitimacy and efficacy of the program, stating that US Military standards are slightly different than commercial aviation, but no doubt that you are immune to prosecution and encouraged to fully disclose information, which is solely used to improve safety for not only for the military, but for the greater good of all mankind. In my mind, that is what makes it unique.
If you were to tell a pilot in 1935 that in 2015, more pilgrims would die traveling on foot to Mecca (or being politically correct, Hajj 2015), then 3 billion passengers on commercial airplanes, travelling at 575 mph, taking off and landing in everything from thunderstorms and dense fog to snow, ice and gale force winds, sometimes even banking between skyscrapers on approach, they would have looked at you as though you were insane and told you to seek immediate psychological help. But those are the facts, made possible by human beings working together using this system and for the greater good of all.

Thinking about Black Box Thinking and the path to success
By marcos_grande
Having listened to this book twice through, then read the reviews posted thus far, it’s difficult to imagine adding to what has already be written by way of summary. So rather than a review, this is more a reflection of personal experience which I hope proves insightful.

My goal in downloading this book was the hope of drilling down into the concept of “failing better;” an idea borne of Samuel Beckett’s oft cited quotation. And though my initial intention was not to validate my own opinion about the efficacy of introducing my students (I’m an educator) to the idea of iterative progress, I wanted to know whether “success through failure” was more than an empty promise. I was not disappointed.

Matthew Syed is a compelling storyteller. His keen eye for our cultural biases toward kneejerk blaming and scapegoating, overvaluing perfection and underestimating the transformative power of “learning from your mistakes” illustrates how reasoned evaluation can been hijacked by expediency and need for tidy (but misguided) explanations when things go badly wrong.

In my view, the most valuable takeaways from Black Box Thinking include, but are likely not limited to, the following:

• Understanding the complexity of a situation requires decelerating the evaluation process if for no other reason than for the sake of making time to take a broader view.

• Ignoring variables doesn’t make them go away, but does make for an incomplete formula that begs for inaccurate conclusions.

• Intuition-based assumptions are generally self-serving and, for the most part, accurate by pure chance alone.

• Data is a four letter word that needs to be part of decision-making. That it may appear as inconvenient truths or mitigating circumstances doesn’t invalidate it.

There are no doubt additional important insights that I’ve not listed, not the least of which is the book’s underlying premise that success is an iterative process which must include failure, and even repeatedly so. The bottom line is that Black Box Thinking is well worth the read -- all 300 pages of it -- and particularly worth the listen as an audiobook (well-narrated). The thought-provoking storytelling alone is worth the price of admission. More than food for thought, the well-substantiated assertions and suggestions are inspiring signposts along the path forward.

A compelling well written book
By Reg Nordman
A very insightful book. Ever wonder why airflight really learns from mistakes, while healthcare continues to make deathly mistakes every year ( despite tremendous leaps forward in medicine). You will be inspired and then dismayed by Syed's book. If you are any way involved in innovation, total quality, best practices and group productivity, this is a book you need to read. Funding/controlling bodies for institutions such as healthcare, governance, the legal system need to also read this book and act on it. A compelling well written book. Good for a four hour plane ride ,there and back

Although many might not recognize the name P.G. Wodehouse, they have inevitably come across his work. Wodehouse was a British humorist who wrote novels, short stories, journalism pieces, and other stuff, becoming extremely popular over a 70 year career. Today he is best known for the Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels and short stories, but he was also a playwright and lyricist who was part author and writer of 15 plays and 250 lyrics. Too much detail on the cricket pitch
By Trevor Kettlewell
After defending his first novel, The Pothunters, against accusations of being too caught up in the minutiae of public school life, I have to concede in this, his second. Where was the editor? Ball by ball accounts of cricket matches can be hard going in real time, but in fictional accounts it's extremely difficult to care. Particularly about such thin characters that appear and disappear so randomly. It holds some interest as a study in the typical concerns and at times obscure social rules of `good form' in a British public school in the early twentieth century, but this is hardly why I read Wodehouse. I don't suppose I read him particularly for plot either, but this one is just too much of a mess. The uncle of the title, for example, is central and then inexplicably forgotten. Perhaps the market was for ex or current pupils that could empathise with the situations without needing to particularly engage with the characters.

This is still Wodehouse, and his characters and descriptions often display his (fabulous) characteristic wit. But his love of cricket and rugby here goes beyond charm and into tedium. Later golf books, for example, get the mix right. As I work my way through the unavoidably hit and miss vast canon I hope it isn't too long before I'm back to hits.

For Wodehouse completists only
By Flash Sheridan
Like Sir Pelham's first book, _The Pothunters_, _A Prefect's Uncle_ is largely devoid of the plot, effort, and genius of his later works. There is a rather weak and uninteresting main plot, and a minor subplot that depends on a preposterous and unnecessary coincidence, and there are some slightly memorable characters, so Sir Pelham has made some progress since his first novel.

If you love Monty Python, Faulty Towers, Jeeves and Wooster...
By Robert McRobert
Swine flu or the recession got you down? Are you pinned against the ropes? Have you got the blues? Melancholia got you in its grip? Worried that Obama may not be able to get your brother-in-law the job running US Steel and thus off your couch? .... Fear not! The cry goes out: P.G. Wodehouse to the rescue! There is nothing like a good Wodehouse read to cheer one up, not a pill, not a drink, not a men or women - just Wodehouse! Wodehouse is what the doctor ordered to tickle you in the funny bone and get a smile going on the old face.

The plot and nonsense takes place at Beckford College, a school for boys; where we find lots of farce, word play, pranks, excitement and scandal in the school, and the disruption of some important cricket matches - all in the typically wonderful Wodehouse way! This book is totally hilarious! One loud laugh after another! A Wodehouse masterpiece!

If you love Monty Python, Faulty Towers, Jeeves and Wooster, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and other witty British Comedies, you'll love this great Wodehouse work. The writing, plot, wit, and word play is spot on. This is timeless stuff. And can I add terrific? This is laugh out loud funny. I adored every moment!

China has been the major cultural center of East Asia for about 2000 years, and our knowledge of its religious traditions extends back at least another 1500 years before that. Over that span of 3500 years, China has produced two major systems of religious thought and practice (Confucianism and Daoism) and has thoroughly transformed a third (Buddhism), while its popular, unsystematized religious practices have simultaneously developed as a fourth, semi-independent tradition. All four of these religious traditions have not only shaped Chinese culture but have also influenced the neighboring cultures of Korea, Japan, and parts of Southeast Asia. Today they are becoming much better-known in the `'Vest, through scholarship and through the presence of Chinese communities outside of Asia.

In our increasingly interconnected world, in which political and geographic boundaries are becoming less and less significant and scholarship is continually advancing, new perspectives in cross-cultural studies are constantly being generated. The late Ninian Smart, under whom I was very fortunate to study at the University of California at Santa Barbara, was keenly aware that religions are products of particular cultures, and that the continuing life of those cultures prevents us from closing the books on their religious traditions. Hence the need periodically to reexamine the religions of the world.

Tracing the development of four religious traditions over 3500 years in a book as short as this has not been an easy task. I am grateful to the staff at Laurence King Publishing in London, especially Richard Mason and Christine Davis, for helping me to meet the requirements of this series. I would also like to acknowledge the stimulation and insights I have gained from my students at Kenyon College, where I have taught the course on which this book is based for fifteen years. That course was powerfully influenced by my graduate studies with Robert Gimello and Tu Weiming, who may recognize some of their insights in these pages. Finally, I owe a great deal to Ninian Smart, whose clarity of thinking, sensitivity of interpretation, and boundless goodwill and good cheer were models I will always treasure. This book is dedicated to him.

All things considered, this book is hard to beat if you want to learn about religious traditions in China. It is a little dry, but it does a spectacular job of examining the and interpreting the culture. I highly recommend it for any kind of religions of China class as a basic text to use as a base.

From Kirkus Reviews
English journalist Hancock retells the circumstances and thoughts that led to his discovery that the Lost Ark of the Covenant really exists. (Note that the subtitle is not How Indy and I Raided the Lost Ark.) Hancock was in Ethiopia in 1983, having been hired by the Ethiopian government to write and produce a coffee-table book extolling that country. He was greatly surprised when told that Ethiopia's Falasha Jews did not exist, and that many people could land in jail, or worse, if he went around photographing such nonexistents. Even so, off he went to Axum, deep in the desert, to see the temples and statuary of the Black Jews of Ethiopia. What he found was a sect that claimed to have the original Ark of the Covenant. Refused entrance to the sanctuary of the jealously guarded Ark, Hancock went home--and saw Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark, which inspired him to investigate the history of the Ark. Built at the foot of Mount Sinai, Hancock tells us, it ``was deposited [around 955 B.C.] by Solomon in the Holy of Holies of the First Temple.'' Later, Hancock says, it was stolen by Solomon's outcast son and carried south to Ethiopia and kept there for 800 years by a Judaic cult. Then it apparently was seized by the Knights Templar, who thought that it was the Holy Grail. The Knights converted the Jews, who kept the Ark in a great church. And to protect the Ark, all of the churches in the cult have their own replicas of the Ark: The original is never seen, even on the holiest days of the year. In 1991, during the Gulf War, Hancock returned to Axum to see the Ark--and was refused. Not as much fun as might be hoped as Hancock digs through literary and bibical texts while convincing himself that the Ark exists. Historical Detective Work at its Finest
By Daniel Jolley
This is an exceedingly interesting book, albeit controversial, for anyone interested in "history's mysteries." For those of us who have pored through the works of Zecharia Sitchin and dared to ponder questions that the scientists and religious authorities regard as sacrilegious (after all, science itself is a religion), this is especially interesting material. You don't have to believe in Hancock's theories (although he offers a weighty, serious argument for them) in order to love this book. Even if you regard the idea of the Ark of the Covenant resting in Ethiopia (or the notion that the Ark even exists) as preposterous, you can still enjoy this book in the same way you can delight in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories; this book is about solving a mystery. Just as Holmes' series of adventures often resulted in no real, firm, graspable truth, so is the case here. This detracts little from the story, however. The final judgment is left up to you, the reader, which is the trademark of any substantive mystery--only in this way can the great and unattainable "truth," in its most esoteric sense, be glimpsed.
Granted, Hancock is not a scientist or theologian, but this may in fact serve as his greatest qualification for tackling the types of lofty problems he embraces. After all, the vast majority of scientists and theologians dismiss without consideration the sorts of "wild" ideas discussed in this book; if not for the open minds of men like Mr. Hancock, many truths that have now been established would remain jokes told by the arrogant "experts" over tea--take, as an example, the discovery of Troy. As for the content of this book, it truly is a mix of history, religion, and archaeology. This is not Indiana Jones' quest for the Ark of the Covenant, so anyone looking for that sort of action will be disappointed. Anyone expecting to see pictures and Hancock's personal descriptions of the Ark will also be disappointed. Whatever rests in the Church of Saint Mary of Zion in Ethiopia will not and probably should not be revealed to the eyes of anyone other than its appointed guardian.
What you will find in this book is a lesson on the history of the ancient Israelites and of the Biblical Ark, a history of Ethiopia (which I for one had never really heard the first thing about), a history of the mysterious Knights Templar (truly fascinating and mysterious men), and an enlightening story of Gothic architecture and mediaeval literature. Parzival is not an easy book to read, and thus it is rather unknown, even though it is just as important (and, if Hancock is correct, much more important) than Malory's better-known treatment of King Arthur and his search for the Holy Grail. The idea Hancock presents, namely that the Holy Grail was in fact the Ark of the Covenant, manages to bring together the story of the two most important Biblical artifacts in history. If you have an open mind and a zest for "understanding," then this book should definitely be included on your reading list. Believe Hancock's opinions or not, the tale he tells is fascinating, dramatic, and intellectually enlightening.

Fascintating, but sloppy
By Simon Kinahan (simonk@cadence.com)
I found this book and exciting and stimulating read, and Hancock does his research well, as best I can tell. He leaves the reader with a great deal to think about, both in the biblical context of discovering what happened to the Ark, and in the Ethiopian context of the unusual reverence the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has for the Ark, and their claim to possess the original artifact.
However readers should be forwarned that, as in all his other work I have read, Graham Hancock is willing to draw the most sensational conclusions from what appears to be very scanty evidence. He links his ideas together very poorly and often reasons from ealier conclusions that, while they seem reasonable, are never backed up fully. He has no single compelling piece of evidence, just a lot of suggestive ideas.
Nontheless, it is an excellent read, and I highly recommend it. I just want to warn those who read it and feel 'all them historians and egyptologists is wrong, Graham Hancock knows the TRUTH' that he never proves any of his theories, and therefore as well as not being easy to dismiss, his ideas should not be too easily accepted.

West Arabian evidence
By DR. BERNARD LEEMAN
Hancock's book is an entertaining account of an enthusiast who, from his own admission, was largely ignorant of his subject when he set out to discover the truth about it. The book has three main flaws. Whether by design or cultural self-centeredness, Hancock is too interested in searching for Knights Templar involvement, although the so-called Templar crosses in Ethiopia/Eritrea date from the 5th century AD. Linking the Ark to medieval Europeans sells books [Munro-Hay's Aksum (1991) and The Ark of the Covenant (1999) are far more informative but don't sell outside academia because European historical romanticism is absent in his works]. Secondly, Hancock had little understanding of the Kebra Nagast, which is a combination of two separate works, the Sheba-Menelik Cycle dating from oral (10th century BC) and written (pre-400BC) Semitic sources (Josephus summarises it (ca.90AD); and the Caleb Cycle (ca 518 AD). When Isaac's team compiled the Kebra Nagast around 1314 AD they used an Arabic Sheba-Menelik Cycle and a Ge'ez Caleb Cycle and then put in their own comments to try and make sense of the bizarre geography of the Sheba-Menelik Cycle. This included references to Cairo and Alexandria, which didn't exist in Solomon's day, something Hancock overlooked. Hancock is hardly alone in his third and major miscalculation. It is now generally accepted in mainstream archaeology that no evidence exists in Israel/Palestine of the events and places described in the Old Testament up until the Babylonian captivity. The site of modern day Jerusalem in Solomon's day was covered by a few small villages. There was no great city and nothing has been found of Omri's even more magnificent capital in Samaria. Historical linguistics, Tamil trade words in Hebrew, the lack of Egyptian words in Hebrew, the history of the Iron-Age (The Hebrews of Joshua were iron-age invaders of Canaan but were supposed to have fled bronze age Egypt), 11th century BC political-economic conditions, the name for the Ark in Ge'ez, the pattern of ancient Jewish settlement, the Saudi Gazette of Place Names, inscriptions on the Ethiopian plateau, remnant Judaic populations in northern Somalia and Eritrea, the history of the Queen of Sheba (three are mentioned in the Tigre inscriptions) and the extraordinary geographical references all point to the true location of Solomon's kingdom being between Taima and the Yemen border, in West Arabia, not Israel/Palestine. The Ark was probably stolen from a sanctuary near Abha in Arabia. If Hancock's hypothesis of a theft from the site of present Jerusalem it is difficult to accept that the Ark, reputedly the most dangerous weapon on the planet and in the hands of a small group of hunted desperadoes, would be casually waved all the way through tightly controlled Dynastic Egypt which was ruled by Solomon's own father in law. Hancock suggests the Ark was in the hands of the Elephantine Aramaic-speaking Jewish garrison in the 5th century BC who many commentators believe introduced Judaism to Ethiopia. However the Tigre inscriptions testify to a mixed Hebrew/Sheba population ruled by kings and queens of Shebans around 700 BC, which seems to corroborate the events in the Sheba-Menelik Cycle. Personally I believe the Sheba-Menelik Cycle pre-dates the Old Testament, which was first written around 400 BC without vowels and eventually standardised with vowels between 500-950 AD. Nevertheless, Hancock's work on the Ark in Ethiopia is very informative. What he has missed is a chance to show that the history of the Ark is the key to the true location of the Old Testament.

Atom-Photon Interactions: Basic Processes and Applications, by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Jacques Dupont-Roc, Gilbert Grynberg

Atom-Photon Interactions: Basic Processes and Applications allows the reader to master various aspects of the physics of the interaction between light and matter. It is devoted to the study of the interactions between photons and atoms in atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, and laser physics. The elementary processes in which photons are emitted, absorbed, scattered, or exchanged between atoms are treated in detail and described using diagrammatic representation. The book presents different theoretical approaches, including:
* Perturbative methods
* The resolvent method
* Use of the master equation
* The Langevin equation
* The optical Bloch equations
* The dressed-atom approach

Each method is presented in a self-contained manner so that it may be studied independently. Many applications of these approaches to simple and important physical phenomena are given to illustrate the potential and limitations of each method.

Great Book but Bad Printing Quality
By Arvid Kingl
I really like this book and the prequel. However, some pages are really badly printed. In some equations you cannot tell whether there is supposed to be a "+", a "-" or an equal "=" sign as there is not enough ink to read it.
Given the price of that book this shouldn't happen. This is Wiley's fault.

Very useful
By JMF
Atom Photon Interactions is an excellent text for atomic and optical physics. I refer back to the review material---transition amplitudes, quantum electrodynamic fundamentals, etc--- over and over again. Naturally, these sections are very brief, and the book works best along side Cohen-Tannoudji's more elementary texts Quantum Mechanics and Photons and Atoms, or their equivalents.
The later chapters are rich in techniques and intuition applicable to atom-trapping, spectroscopy, laser theory, etc. Cohen-Tannoudji covers a lot of material, and manages to link it all to a few basic fundamental principles. The book is extremely well-organized, with bite-sized sections and appendices to each chapter. An excellent collection of exercises with solutions is included in the back. Unfortunately, the text does not prompt the reader to try working these problems at appropriate times (sadly, I didn't realize the exercises were there until I'd been using the book for some time). Like Photons and Atoms, this is primarily a book for theorists; its one weakness, I feel, is that the principles, however clear, never seem connected to the actual numbers that an experimentalist or system designer can relate to.

One of the best books
By irfan
This is one of the best books in the field of QED. I used it for self-study. Only downside (also upside) about it is that everything is explained so completely that the reaser might become a bit lazy at times to spend some intellectual effort. An excellent book for self-study.
