A compelling backstory for Han Solo

Every guy who's ever seen Star Wars has wanted to be Han Solo. Now, A.C. Crispin's Han Solo Trilogy fills in the backstory, and does it well.

The Paradise Snare begins with an orphaned, outcast Solo trying to make his way as a pilot. However, he soon gets hired by a cult fronting for drug dealers. What makes the book work isn't epic battles and gun fights, but how Han's relationships and friendships develop. We get a glimpse of how Han developed an affection for Wookies and his first love interest. At times, this story almost seems like a tale straight out of Charles Dickens, but it really suits Han's character.

The Hutt Gambit is filled with first encounters, including the first time Han met Chewbacca, Lando, Boba Fett, and Jabba the Hutt, as well as several characters from the Nar Shadda moon, such as Zala and Maiko, from the Star Wars: Dark Empire Trilogy. A.C. Crispin does a good job of portraying a realistically cynical Star Wars underworld. Han still seems like Han, but it's also clear his character is growing from the The Paradise Snare.

Rebel Dawn tries to bridge the gap to the original trilogy and tie up loose ends with Han and Bria's relationship. It also explains why Chewie worried Lando still held a grudge against Han. The book works, but perhaps not quite as smoothly as the first two books. Both Zala's suggestions she and Han get married and Han's pining for Bria seem a bit out of character. I did like the intrigue with the Hutts. Crispin makes them into believable mafioso types. Xizor was also well employed.

At the least, the trilogy will give you a new respect for everybody's favorite smuggler and how far he's traveled to become respectable.

About the Editors

Thomas Rieger, DrRerSoc, has been the chairman of the standards council of EuropeActive since 2012. He holds a doctoral degree in social sciences with a specialization in sport science (German PhD equivalent) from the University of T�bingen and a master’s degree in public health. In 2007, he was appointed as a professor of sport management at the Business and Information Technology School (BiTS) in Iserlohn, Germany. At BiTS, he is the vice dean of the bachelor’s programme of sport and event management and the master's programme of international sport and event management. Previously, Dr. Rieger served as visiting professor at the Real Madrid Graduate School and the European University Cyprus in Nicosia. Before entering academia in 2006, he gained more than six years of experience in the fitness industry, especially in the fields of fitness marketing and quality management.

Ben Jones, BSc (Hons), is a founder and director of BlueSkies Fitness Ltd., a company that provides workplace wellness solutions to small- and medium-sized employers, offers learning and development consultancy, and manages the process of provider accreditation for EuropeActive. Mr. Jones has extensive experience in developing standards, qualifications, assessments and learning resources in the UK, Europe and UAE and has written for EuropeActive, Active IQ, VTCT, Lifetime Awarding and other organization. He is a master trainer for MEND, Momenta and TechnoGym and was one of the first PTA global faculty in the UK. Previously, he held the role of teaching and curriculum manager at Lifetime Training. Before entering the fitness sector in 1999 and going on to build a successful personal training practice and hold multiple fitness management roles, Mr. Jones studied physiology at Leeds University.

Alfonso Jim�nez, PhD, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, FLF,�is a professor of exercise science and health and the executive director of the Centre for Applied Biological and Exercise Sciences at Coventry University (UK) and a member of the scientific advisory board of UKActive Research Institute. Previous roles include professor and dean of the faculty of health, exercise and sports science at European University of Madrid (Spain) and main academic leader of the Real Madrid Graduate School; professor, deputy dean and head of school of sport and exercise science at Victoria University in Melbourne (Australia); professor and head of the centre for sport science and human performance at the University of Greenwich in London (UK); and chairman of the standards council at EuropeActive. He was awarded�honorary membership of EuropeActive in recognition of his outstanding service. He is currently a visiting professor and international research associate at ISEAL at Victoria University, visiting professor at the University of Greenwich and chair of the research and dissemination commission at the Healthy & Active Living Foundation in Spain. Before entering academia, Dr. Jim�nez focused on management, research and sales in the fitness industry.

About the Author
Herbert S. Klein is the author of 22 books and 163 articles in several languages on Latin America and comparative themes in social and economic history. Among these books are The Atlantic Slave Trade, 2nd edition (2010) and four studies of slavery, the most recent of which are Slavery and the Economy of S�o Paulo, 1750-1850 (co-author, 2003), African Slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean (co-author, 2008) and Slavery in Brazil (co-author, 2009), as well as four books on Bolivian history. He has also published books on such diverse themes as The American Finances of the Spanish Empire, 1680-1809 (1998), A Population History of the United States (2004) and Hispanics in the United States Since 1980 (co-author, 2010).

Valuable to any traveler to Bolivia

I read Herbert Klein as I traveled, through Bolivia. The first five chapters (Pre-Columbian through the Creation of a Nation State 1841) enriched my visits to Sucre, Potosi, Oruro, and La Paz. Though the text is not intended for the average tourist, it is valuable to any traveler who has more than a passing curosity about this unusual, provocative country.

Herbert Klein is Profossor of Lain American History at Columbia and his writting style reflects this. "A Concise Short History of Bolivia" reads like a college text book, jammed with dates, famous and obsure names, events and the obicucious commentary. It is evident that Klien has a sharp grasp of Bolivian politics and ecomnomics, and his comments bring light to the the plight and oppression that the people of Bolivia have endure. No where in South America have the poor been as exploited as they have in Bolivia.

The leaders of Bolivia have consistantly placed the hopes for an economic renewal in Bolivia on one major export (first silver, then tin, now gas). They have not learned from history. They exploit one non-renewable resource, and spend the money (that doesn't first go into the pockets of corrupt politians and their cornies) on bigger government building, a larger militiary (Bolivia, a land locked nation still supports a Navy) and squander the people's future. Herbert Klein clearly show how history documented this. Saddly, it is happening again today with the newly found reserves of LPG.

After visiting Potosi and its infamious mines of 'Cerro Rico', a huge cone shaped mountain where over 300 mines exist to extract silver, I was perplexed to find that Klein does not mention that over 8 million, million! men have suffered and died mining this mountain since 1545 when the silver was discovered. Klein glosses over this fact, choosing not to elucidate how the Spanish Crown was responsible for the genenocide, yes genenocide, of the indigious poplulation. Strikingly, Klien is silent. I sensed in reading this history text he did not want to rock any boats, and instead choose a text that would be "acceptable" for any college class (including those in Spain)... Viva the status quo!

That said, the text is strongly recommended for any student of South American history, Bolivia and for those that are planning more than a few days in this wonderfully obscure country.

Read it if you must (but what else is there?)

I grabbed this book as we packed our things and headed to the hospital for my baby's birth. I don't believe I would have read it otherwise. But I had nearly two days and while my wife and baby slept, I read.

The writing is tedious--single sentence paragraph after single sentence paragraph. Klein often repeats his ideas and his historical summaries. It is as if he knows that the previous paragraphs lack clarity, and he circles around for another go.

But the worse part is that Klein leaves out all the things that make history interesting. There are no personal stories or anecdotes. He handles famous Bolivian figures like Simon Pati�o, once the wealthiest man in the world, by looking at his land holdings and his mining operations. He does not examine the man himself. He glosses over entire regimes, barely touching on known and well documented atrocities. He does not draw connections between Bolivia and the rest of South America, does not mention the influx of Jews feeing Nazi Germany (nearly all of whom left after the war). Only a few paragraphs mention slavery (both Indian and African).

There are not many books about Bolivia. And I understand why. There are more people in Manhattan than all of Bolivia. However, its history is fascinating. It is a history of grand failures. Though Klein's book did fill-out my understanding of Bolivian history, it failed to do the place justice. There is no magic in Klein's history, no personality. The tragedy of the place is lost in long circular sentences and pedestrian historical examinations. The book will be a good reference should I ever need one, but I would not recommend reading it through.

Accurate and engaging

As a college student doing research on Bolivia, this text provided an excellent framework for my overall understanding of Bolivia's development. The book is both accurate and interesting, and provides a broad overview that includes virtually every important development in Bolivian history. There is also an excellent bibliography. Excellent resource, highly recommended

About the Author
Todd Bridges was born in San Francisco, California in 1965. He became the first African-American child actor to have a recurring role on a successful TV series, The Waltons. He also appeared on Little House on the Prairie, and in the landmark miniseries Roots. He was a regular on the Barney Miller spinoff Fish, before landing his best-known role as Willis on Diff'rent Strokes.

Bridges has a brother and sister who are both actors, Jimmy Bridges and Verda Bridges. His father, James Bridges, Sr., became one of the first prominent black Hollywood agents, while his mother, Betty A. Bridges, was also an actress and later became one of Hollywood's greatest managers and acting coaches.

Today, Todd�is a working actor, director, and producer and he and his brother James Jr., have partnered to establish their own production company, Little Bridge Productions. Todd is married and has�a son, Spencir, and a daughter, Bo.

Todd Bridges survived

I liked the honesty about how bad his life became in the drug years. I loved this show I'm happy he made it through those unimaginable drug years.

Raw, but not in a good way.

If you're looking for a raw, no holds barred depiction of drugs, sex, and violence, then this may be the biography for you. However, if you're looking for anything heavier than that: introspection, self-awareness, and maturation, this may not be the place to look. I couldn't bear to keep reading after around 200 pages, not because of Todd's raw depiction of the street life, but rather because his chronicle feels thoroughly deficient in other, more important, respects.

First of all, Todd demonstrates little understanding of himself and often seems to be stroking his own ego. He goes on and on about what a big deal he was as a child/teen star, often seems like he's bragging when he discusses his exploits and promotions in the drug world, and constantly paints himself as an innocent victim, even going as far as to say that none of what he did was his fault other than taking drugs in the first place. How about his running two crack houses and intentionally getting several women hooked? How about all the crime and death he indirectly promoted through his drug dealing activities? At one particularly important point in the book, he finds himself wrongfully accused of murder and never connects the dots to realize that the murder was committed by his people in his crack house against his arch rival. No, Todd claims he never fired a gun, but many guns fired because of him. Todd sees himself here as an innocent victim of racial profiling and personal grudges in much the same way as he was when the police repeatedly pulled him over earlier in life and hassled him for being black. The two situations are far from the same. It's not that Todd needs to show more remorse over the things he did; it's that he doesn't show any because he doesn't see himself as deserving blame. Though he often talks about how far he fell and how ashamed of himself he'd become, it was never for anything other than being a drug user who no longer cared about his career. He'll spend entire pages talking about pioneering a way to make crack in the microwave or rising to become a small time drug lord in such a short amount of time, but these read like bragging rights, not confessions.

Secondly, there are several times in the book where Todd's accounts seem highly unreliable. Though there are times where he knows that what he's saying sounds hard to believe and says as much, there are other accounts that simply don't add up. At one point in the book, Todd is cheated out of his entire fortune and is left with nothing. Yet, in the next few chapters, he mentions his nice five bedroom home, his Ethan Allen dining room table, and his BMW (and he has another car too). Sure, he may have lost most of his fortune, but he's clearly still affluent and goes on to survive comfortably and support a heavy drug addiction without working or stealing for many years after. At another point in the book, Todd's drug lord mentor has four crack houses, but when Todd takes over his business a few pages later, there are two crack houses. In a third memorable instance, Todd's old rival gets revenge on Todd by knocking him down, running into his crack house, and locking him out. This makes absolutely no sense. Drug lords seeking revenge outside of a crack house at night fire guns and kill. They do not run into houses and lock people out. The fact that this is all part of Todd's alibi for how he had nothing to do with this man ending up in his crack house and being brutally murdered makes this account even more suspicious. There's also a time when Todd is on death row for killing "Henry," and the cops add an armed robbery charge to the mix. Todd tells them that Henry is the one who did it, and to go look for him. Why would he have said that if Henry's death is the whole reason Todd was on death row in the first place?

Finally, the general writing style is exceptionally poor and non-engaging. Todd often sounds like he's just rambling and heading toward a general direction in his narrative. There's also an excessive usage of commas in the middle of sentences and before the word "because" any time that it is used. I'm not sure what co-writer Sarah Tomlinson actually did for this book, but it feels completely unedited.

Please don't get me wrong. Todd Bridges has led a fascinating and incredibly painful life, he has been the victim of many unfortunate circumstances including abuse, sexual abuse, and blatant racism, he has pulled himself out of the abyss, and (in at least one instance) he has performed a heroic feat that saved someone's life. I have nothing against Todd Bridges as a person, but I could certainly do without Killing Willis.

Todd Keeps it Real

I really did enjoy this book. I even cried while reading certain sections( read the book and u will know what section I'm referring to)... I'm the same age as Todd, and grew up in Los Angeles so I could really relate to a lot of the drug stuff he talked about that went down in our community. He was a part of it, and lived to tell about it which is a miracle in it's self. Todd laid it all out in this book, and I think fans will really enjoy it like I did.

It was okay

This was just okay. I liked that this involved a pretty unique shifter but other than a crazy ex-boyfriend him being rare was never really an issue. This book was more about his inability to believe that people could be genuine friends and want him for him and no other reason. I enjoyed the story but there was just something lacking.

The title might be a little insulting but it works.

This book assumes you know little to nothing about computers. It will take you from ground zero to a functional user. The scope is well within the default software that comes with Microsoft systems. There are plenty of color pictures diagrams and explanations of how and why.

The only thing that you need to be aware of as with all computer books is the technology changes so the speed of processors and the size of drives may change before you get this book.

Some books claim that they are in plain English this one is. It uses the margin gimmick to tell you what hot tips are don't forget tips and beware warnings. You don't need the margins but they're comforting to have in the book.

The book is well designed be able to those step-by-step from front to back however if you need a little extra help or think you have missed something there is an index in the back that will carry you back to that particular location.

I suggest that even if you do know how to use computers that this book may tell you how to use computers more efficiently or clear up anything that you might have a misconception about.

So don't let the title or the sophomoric approach turn you off and miss something that can be useful.

This book starts out with assumption that the reader already knows more than she/he probably does..Terms I have little to no understanding of are bandied about starting on page 1. I gave up and ordered 8.1 The Missing Manual. It hasn't arrived yet, but seven years ago, which was the last time I bought a new computer, the Missing Manual book provided all I needed to get up and running...

Good introduction to Food Science

I bought this for a high-school student but read it myself first. The book claims to be college-level but I found it to be rather simplistic. I understand that this is an introduction to food science so it is properly represented. I was hoping for a bit more "science" and less history. Yes, Clarence Birdseye essentially created frozen vegetables but what is the science behind his innovations?
