This book was exactly what was needed for the cellular biology class I was taking. It was very helpful for the course, but for some things I think it could have been a little more detailed. For others, it would have been better if less confusing.

About the Author

Shawn Steiman is Hawaii's own "Doctor Coffee," with a PhD from the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa specializing in coffee studies. Steiman frequently lectures and conducts workshops with farmers and the general public on coffee related topics and was selected to be a judge for the 2016 Edible Communities EDDY Awards. His business, Coffea Consulting, educates farmers and connoisseurs on coffee from a scientific standpoint. Working with small farmers is a passion for Steiman, who has traveled to Zambia to help smallholder coffee growers compete in the world coffee market. He was a contributing editor to the recently released textbook, Coffee: A Comprehensive Guide to the Bean, the Beverage and the Industry (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013).

Are you obsessed with coffee? Then this book is your next fix! Whether you’re just a casual drinker or planning to challenge your favorite barista to a cage fight, you will find everything that you didn’t know you didn’t know yet in this book.

The book is divided in four major parts that will enhance your knowledge about the intricacies of growing coffee beans, how they are roasted, and eventually how all this comes together as our formidable favorite brew.

Well illustrated with infographics, each spread addresses a specific question and answers it with well presented information. These questions range from the practical on how to get the most buzz from a cup to the psychological as how to avoid the pitfalls of coffee sampling. The information presented by the author is to the point and always supported by current scientific research, without ever getting onerous.

When I first flipped through the book I was immediately drawn in and kept reading for a few pages. Inspired with knowledge,I then wandered over to my kitchen cabinet and started sniffing the neglected variety of half empty bags of coffee that had accumulated there. Could I smell the difference between Arabica and Robusta? My consciousness during this otherwise sleepy daily ritual was buzzing with questions now. Where do these beans come from, what do they taste like, why do they smell like this, why it is a bad idea to put them in the freezer, and why should I care?

This book enhanced my daily coffee rituals in more ways than any new brewing gadget could have ever done by itself. If you’re planning on gifting someone a French Press, make sure to include “The Little Coffee Know-It-All” along with it. They will serve you better coffee - forever! Trust me.

Great summary of all the little details that go into your coffee!

This book is a great practical guide to all the different aspects of coffee, from the beans all the way to the cup. The book consists of many 1 or 2 page discussions on various aspects of coffee, such as roast level, brew time, and many others. The author summarizes the scientific literature on each topic, boiling it down to the essential facts. I learned about the effects of temperature on coffee plants and the keys to brewing a delicious cup of coffee, among other factoids. This book is great for learning what those terms such as peaberry beans, shade-grown coffee really mean for your coffee taste.

This book is amazing! Set up like a FAQ page, it's easy to read about one topic or devour the whole book in one sitting! It's easy to read, extremely informative, and makes coffee even more fun. I wish I could find a book like this about topics other than coffee too!

A Good Supplement to the Official Preparation Book

The official book for the MTA 98-364 exam preparation is fairly comprehensive (albeit poorly written), but the actual exam includes topics not covered in the book. This is where this little guide comes in - it gives coverage of a few advanced topics that can make a difference in test scores. Definitely do not use it as a stand-alone text, but it's useful to go through once you've finished your main study course.

I was surprised by ridiculously large font in the book - it seems like the authors had some trouble filling 100 pages. The book overall could use some more work - it reads more like typed-up study notes than an actual textbook. However, for the price it may be worth it because it could help you avoid paying $115 to retake the MTA exam. I was grateful for the unit on triggers, which came up in my exam, but were not even mentioned in the official MTA 98-364 text.

ok, good overview

This book is a good overview, but after taking several practice tests it seems to contain
more advanced context. It reviews MS Server Reporting Services configuration, XML, SSIS tasks, Locking, etc.
This seems more advanced than the listed necessary Microsoft knowledge needed for the exam. Too me, it seems that it was intentional to get more money out of people buy making them buy 2-3 books to cover "possible" exam questions. Adding more content than necessary in one book and not enough in the Database Administration Fundamentals book specifically recommended by Microsoft. And on top of that, some of the practice test "answers" by GMetrix found to be wrong after collaborating with 2 SQL groups. So I can say I am disappointed in all the books and practice tests out there to support this exam. It is a very confusing process for learners and it is obvious it is not meant to "really" help people become certified. If that isn't correct, than improvements really should be made or possibly skip this level and go to the next level exam. So I bought 2 books (64.00 + 24.00), practice test (0-50.00) and actual test (150.00) to attempt this certification which really isn't recognized by employers for SQL Database Administrative Roles. I wouldn't recommend the investment.

This is what you get when you write a book and publish it without actually reading it first.

Most of the material had nothing to do with the exam, which I took today and passed, no thanks to this book.

Excellent book

I have compared quite a few books on electromagnetics, and this one is the most detailed and most honest presentation of electromagnetics at the introductory level I have found. This books definitely tops others in terms of content and clarity. I compared it to Field and Wave Electromagnetics by Cheng, Fundamentals of Engineering Electromagnetics by Cheng, Elements of Electromagnetics by Sadiku, Engineering Electromagnetics by Inan, and Engineering Electromagnetics by Hayt. I should note however that Engineering Electromagnetics by Inan is a very good first read for electromagnetics students.

Honest work but ....

I do not think this book is substantially different or better than what's already out there at an intermediate level for engineers. (e.g Lorrain's Electromagnetic Fields or Rao's Elements of Engineering EM or Johnks book). It does discuss optical dielectric filters and the matrix method for analyzing thin films in more detail than other E&M books (but no better than any standard optics text). It is also reasonably complete in its topics. I would recommend Inan's book except that his Engineering level book does not cover oblique incidence of waves (only normal) or dielectric waveguides. He placed that in a 2nd electromagnetic waves book.

If you do not mind buying and paying for two books, I also feel Inan's books are really well done.
