About the Author
John Alcock is Regents' Professor Emeritus of Biology at Arizona State University, USA. His research deals with the behavioral ecology of insect mating systems, with projects that have taken him from Arizona to Costa Rica and Australia. He wrote The Triumph of Sociobiology (2001) and coauthored The Evolution of Insect Mating Systems (1983) with Randy Thornhill. Alcock has also written seven other books on animal behavior and natural history for general audiences. One of these, In a Desert Garden, received the Burroughs' Award for natural history writing in 1998. Dr. Alcock also received the Dean's Quality Teaching Award the first year it was given at Arizona State University.

Ok. I take it back (send it back)

Every time I teach Animal Behaviour I swear that I am going to change texts "the next time" -and every time UNTIL NOW my students have said that they REALLY liked Alcock, well, the latest edition changes all that. As other reviewers have noted (and for reasons that escape me) Alcock has allowed his publisher to "dumb down" the text into a bland "pretty face" that turned students off in droves. As I moved through each chapter I kept thinking "How could someone as smart & interesting as Alcock make so many cool subjects so BORING?" Previous editions convince me that it ain't him, so it must be the publisher. Margins are huge, more and more gratuitous "illustrations" clutter up the text & break one's stream of thought, and by mid-term I essentially threw up my hands, apologized to the class & went to using the original primary sources with the book as a marginal reference for those that got lost. If you have a huge lecture course full of unimaginative students who want to take one & one only Behaviour course so that they can say that they have "done Behaviour" then this text is probably perfect for you, otherwise I would suggest haunting used book shops for past editions or going straight to the literature. the whole thing reminds me of "New Coke" -a marketing scheme that ignored its market. Alcock is an excellent scholar and in the past his book has been a great source of original material which I have encouraged my students to have on their shelves as a reference source,but this is a shame.

Wouldn't recommend to instructors

I'm really unhappy with my choice of this book for my college-level animal behavior course. Each chapter lacks any overarching structure or organization, and is instead just one example after another, strung together without continuity. Case studies are ONLY useful if they complement fundamental information about the theory underlying the concept. In this textbook, the underlying concepts are presented as afterthoughts or parenthetical sidenotes (when they are presented at all). Many of the figures are informative, but a good percentage of them are also just pretty pictures that don't convey anything about the topic at hand.
Given that many students opt not to open their textbooks at all, I look to the course text as a resource the students can turn to if they don't understand something we discuss in class. I don't think this text would help clarify any of the concepts I teach, so it's not particularly useful. I will definitely be looking for a better text in the future.

Going downhill

I used this book as a student and enjoyed it then. Years later, as a professor, I decided to switch from Krebs and Davies' text to this one for the greater number of examples. However, the lack of theoretical underpinning makes this book more of a fun read than an educational one. My students often thought "wow, thats cool" without understanding the significance. I also found the avoidance of mathematical models troubling. This is a trend I have seen in the most recent Ricklefs' Ecology text as well (which I no longer use). Beautiful photos, easy to read, lots of examples, but much too watered down. I would give this book to my parents to read to understand animal behavior, but I wont use it for a college text again.

About the Author
Adam Ballinger was twenty-six when he joined the Territorial Army. Following publication of The Quiet Soldier, he left the City of London, where he worked in finance and management consultancy, and began a long career in education. He has taught in four secondary schools and has led over twenty school-based expeditions. He founded a Service Project, renovating a school in Central Africa and has written for the OUP, HMSO, Sunday Times and Saturday Telegraph. He is currently a Headmaster in England.

The Quiet Soldier

Adam Ballinger liked to travel and backpack through the mountains. On one trip, he encountered a man who gave him a phone number and told him he could make it through. Thus began the odyssey of Adam Ballinger in joining the 21 SAS of Britains' Territorial Army, roughly equivalent to the Reserves in the US.

To get into the unit, Ballinger faced a Selection just as rigorous as that of the 22 (active duty) SAS, but was required to maintain his own fitness when not meeting every weekend. Ballinger is required to go through this and at the same time worry about his girlfriend/fianc� and his job. He finds that the number of those who make it exceedingly few, and those that do have problems in their civilian lives from spending so much of their time maintaining their conditioning and meeting every weekend for 48+ hours, often required to spend a week undergoing training at a time then slip back into their lives without telling anyone what they are doing.

Ballinger is an educated man who arrives with a job, a girlfriend, and not knowing what he is getting himself into, and finishes a man with a tenuous hold on his job, a fianc� he doesn't get to see much of and still not understanding what has driven him to keep going, while others either quit or were sent packing. Some of his fellows have military backgrounds, some, including himself, do not. Ultimately, all who partake in the experience are changed by it and that is where Ballinger shines. He describes the changes in himself and those around him through the grueling process of selection, which he describes in detail.

A class book penned by a thinking man. In spite of another mindless review, Ballinger did complete Selection and was badged 21 SAS. Many soliders will be inspired by this book and many will feel threatened, unnerved by knowing a peace loving and intelligent thinking man can endure far tougher training than they ever would. A timeless classic and the inspiration for many an attempt at SAS Selection

Excellent Insight into SAS Selection

I have read a number of books on special forces / SAS etc and have an interest in the selection and training processes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, not just because of the detailed account provided, but also the atmosphere created by the writing. The insights into other SAS selection candidates and the instructors are also very believable and interesting.

I would recommend this book as a down to earth, non-sensationalised account of what the author put himself through in his endeavours to join the SAS Regiment.

About the Author
Lorraine Wallace had two great passions growing up--riding horses and cooking. She became an expert in both. Moving to Middleburg, Virginia in the 1980s, she became a competitor on the amateur showjumping circuit and won awards on her horse, Strait Man. At the same time, she started her own extensive garden--growing vegetables, herbs, and fl owers. She developed an appreciation for organic ingredients and a deep love for cooking.

Wonderful recipes, easily adapted to suit the taste of your family's palate. A must-have book for the soup section.

Though I have only made a few of the recipes in this book, I must say, this cookbook has quickly replaced previous favorites in the soup section of my bookshelf. I find this book on my nightstand quite often, anxious for an opportunity to try another recipe in Lorraine's book.

As with any recipe, one should review the ingredients and techniques first. By no means are my changes intended to 'correct' the recipes, but rather to add my own flair and tastes to enhance what my family enjoys, like extra carrots!

For example, the Tortellini Meatball Soup was fabulous, though I made small changes such as replacing half the sausage with hamburger, and may consider cooking the meatballs first before adding them to the soup, instead of adding them raw, as called for in the recipe. Certainly, while they cook to proper temperature, they are a bit soft, and we simply prefer our meatballs a little more firm. Otherwise, this recipe is definitely a keeper, makes an attractive meal, and is well worthy of serving to company. Made it, ate it, loved it! Don't skimp, use the ingredients that are called for in the recipe.

Next up, the Chicken Garlic Straciatella. Excellent. I almost look forward to someone telling me that they don't feel well, just so I can present a batch of this soup. Don't fret - twenty garlic cloves is not too much. The only changes I made were to skip using the blender, and just crush the garlic instead of slicing it, prior to beginning the second step of the soup. One pound of spinach seemed a bit much, so I used less, half that amount would be just fine. Next time, I will add more carrots, and also a scoop of cooked seashell pasta. If you are unable to locate Pecorino cheese, Parmesan is a good replacement. Made it, ate it, loved it.

Next up - French Onion Soup, and then Beef Barley.

I can already tell, this cookbook will be dog-eared and tattered in no time. Thank you, Lorraine.

Mr Sunday's meals

This book should have been titled, "Mr Sunday's meals". The soup recipes are wonderful and so abundant with ingredients that there might be no need to consume anything else afterwards. Mrs Wallace's creativity astounds and satisfies this writer's taste buds. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed her "Salmon Chowder, Oxtail, Green Kale and Kielbasa, Pumpkin and Pear,and Chinese Chicken Noodle" soups. No wonder her husband, Chris Wallace is so full of vim, vigor and sharp-edged wit on his televised show. These soups are nutritious, delicious, and
energizing.

Soups galore. Recipes categorized for Fall, Winter,Spring,Summer, Friends and Family, Game Day favorites and even "Strong Families Start with Good Bones" -- a chapter on stocks:chicken broth, vegetable broth, light fish broth, rich beef broth.

Some Wallace family photos and biographical info is sprinkled among the recipes. Like spices and seasonings, these historical family tidbits enhance the book. "Mr. Sunday's Soups" is both practical, fun and easy to read. Kudos to the author/cook, Mrs Lorraine Wallace.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in good cooking and good food.

Love it!

I continue to try new recipes from this book. I've tried all the winter soups and many of the spring soups. We've loved all of them. What I really like is that the ingredients are common ingredients. Fresh vegetables are in any supermarket with a produce section. I like simple and it has to be good tasting. I make everything we eat from scratch, because prepared foods are not good and contain too much sodium. The soups from this book are especially good and simple to make. The book is nicely done, great photos and wonderful little stories.

An Excellent Book on Colonialism and English Language

Pennycook has a strong insight and argument in English and the Discourses of Colonialism in which he brought lots of fresh ideas that I can make use of in my own research. One of the most useful sections that I can make use of most extensively is the one about colonialism and English Language and Teaching discourses.
Pennycook's argument about ELT and history and discourses of colonialism can be itemized as follows: 1. The colonial construction of Self and Other, of the `TE' and `SOL' remain in many domains of ELT most of whom are still untouched- not researched about. 2. Practices and theories of ELT don't only originate in Britain or the U.S. They are also imported from the colonized countries. 3. Colonialism, in research, shouldn't only be taken as a history of brutal exploitation but the culturally imbedded patterns of thought and practices within the boundaries of the colonized countries do create their own discourses of ELT that must be considered. 4. Curriculum and theory of ELT is not always exported from the Colonizer. The colonized cultures bear and give their ELT theories and practices, and import them to Britain and the U.S.
Those who are interested in ELT and TESOL or those who enjoy readings on Colonialism and Language issues will both enjoy and benefit from this first class book.

The Problem with Pennycook

If you're looking for a detailed study of the ways in which colonialism currently manifests itself in specific ELT methodology and in local contexts, this book will sorely disappoint. If, however, you seek a historical overview of colonialism's impact of the general field of ELT, this book will be of some use. In my own case, I referred to it for the literature review section of my dissertation not because I concur with most of his contentions but because he articulates the viewpoint of a small number of postmodern/colonialist critics of ELT theory and practice. For this reason, I give his book two stars--and perhaps because even academics who should know better need to be rewarded for their earnestness, if not their zealotry. What you will soon note about this book (as with all of Pennycook's major writings) is the degree to which he is willing to use anecdotal evidence and out-of-context quotations to prop up his criticism of the whole ELT enterprise. As one who is clearly enamored with postmodernism, Pennycook's selective application of evidence shouldn't surprise the reader. However, his willingness to ignore any evidence that clearly contradicts his claims is indefensible. Case in point: his relentless verbal assault on Mark Salzman, the author of "Iron and Silk." I was so amazed by Pennycook's commentary that I began to wonder if the book I'd read fifteen years ago was really as empathetic and endearing as I imagined. So I went back and reread it, sharing passages with Chinese friends, including one who made the author's acquaintance during the subsequent filming of his book. Pennycook would have the reader believe that Salzman is a hypocritical, callous-eyed colonialist when even a cursory (but open-minded) reading of his book indicates otherwise. I corresponded with Pennycook about my concerns and he was dismissive, saying that he had moved beyond that critique and had more important matters at hand. That may be, but one is still accountable for what one has published, especially in academic circles and especially considering that Salzman's book is one of the few that offers a genuine counter-discourse of colonialism in ELT. If you are planning to teach or conduct research into the phenomenon of ELT in China, you're better off packing "Iron and Silk" than this morose work.

Pennycook is convincing in arguing that there is a profoundly colonialist dynamic driving the English teaching industry. However, his thesis that things can never change is depressing, utterly mistaken, and (itself) symptomatic of the colonialist mentality he purports to criticise. Even so, the book should be read by people who intend to teach English overseas.

Excellent, thoroughly researched, enjoyable reading

The book is very well written, and very well researched with lots of references. It is all about Indian food. It is pretty comprehensive and focuses on the history and origins of various foods, food-related customs, cooking practices etc. There are lots of insights and relations to other aspects of culture. I found it fascinating and very enjoyable to read. Anyone with an interest in Indian food and culture should find it interesting, especially those who have lived in India.

Detailed but a bit dry

This is one of the only books of its kind on a really interesting topic, but it's more of a scholarly survey than a fun read. That's too bad because it could quite easily have been both. It's also not a great introduction to Indian food itself, because, written in India by an Indian, it presumes a basic familiarity with various dishes and native foodstuffs.
Still, if you are doing some type of research project or know a fair amount about Indian cuisine and just want some hard facts about the history of food preparation and consumption in India, this is the book for you.

He has been involved in numerous research studies carried out for organizations including Dalhousie University, Defense Research and Development, Canada, Exxon Mobil and the National Research Council of Canada.
