Well crafted plot in the Fourth book a major character change that you may or may not care for.
By Takkom
This fourth installment was a well crafted plot succeeding in tying the past and present together. I felt like the final disposition of the main evil character was somewhat lacking as it was by no means final. Levac having a new girlfriend was a nice twist however I felt changing the sexual orientation of a well known character was a bad move and certainly did not work for me. Unlike Ashan Rayne which worked very well. The relationship did not seem natural between Raven and Aspen, and seemed to be more of following the current trend in books to write characters in this manner. It certainly dampened an otherwise excellent tale. I would like to see Raven take the FBI posting however that most likely wont happen as it would leave her mother without a protector. The epilogue explains who it was Raven saw looking down at her when she was shot and at some point she might actually put it together in her head. We have seen this ending before it will be up to Skye to take it somewhere we have not been. There is great potential to move forward with this series although the new relationship of Ravens is not going to sit well for some fans.

Another Great One!
By Steven Smithen
Just when you thought Raven couldnt keep up she just puts it into another gear. I also love the growth of the main characters. And was amazed with the ending another plot twist I didn't see coming. Can't wait for the next installment.

Best entry yet, but still no fifth star from this reviewer
By Paige Ellen
There is no doubt, in my opinion, that this series is getting better with each entry. SK develops her characters slowly over time and introduces some new villains who fit into her alternate reality/urban fantasy world without any stretch of suspension of disbelief required to enjoy any book from these genres.
What is unique in this book is the dual narrative of Raven chasing the same monstrous villain that her father had died pursuing. The second narrative takes the reader back in time to her father's story of that pursuit. What makes it very interesting is that Raven's father's partner is now Raven's boss in the special crimes unit.
Knizley takes us deeper into the vampire world in which her vampire mother is the reigning "Queen of the City" of Chicago. There is a battle, a challenge to her authority which Raven must also deal with while she pursues the current monster.
Two things that I particularly love about this book are: Raven is a damphyr, that is the child of a human father and a vampire mother. She has all the advantages of being a vampire without the need to avoid sunlight. Damphyrs are called "day-walkers" because of that gift. I happen to love really good books featuring a damphyr as the lead character. The other thing I love about Raven is that she just can't turn off her truly snarky humor. She will crack wise even when it looks like she's about to die, that is, just before she kicks major butt.
I would love to reveal the surprise that comes at the end of this book, but that would just be too much of a spoiler and it is such a shocker that I would never ruin the readers' pleasure upon discovering the surprise "ending". It certainly sets up the next volume in the series, which I have just started.
The reader of this review may wonder why only four stars if I love the book so much. It gets only four stars because so far, SK has not offered anything truly new to this genre. Pretty much every other damphyr book I have read before this series has already covered the powers and vampire politics and the kick-butt, snarky humored heroine. So, it gets four stars until something really unique to set this series apart takes place. I will say that the stunner at the end of this volume holds the potential to squeeze that fifth star out of this reviewer.
Make no mistake, this book is a great read and without question the best in the series so far. Do start at volume one, though, in order to understand all that is covered previously and is just part of the story background at this point. Highly recommended!
